Position Information: Description

The function/mission of the Department of Biomedical Sciences is to educate, train and graduate the highest caliber of undergraduate and graduate scientists who will, through innovative scientific breakthroughs, make significant contributions to the state of North Dakota and the entire USA; to support the UND School of Medicine and Health Sciences and other medical, pharmaceutical, and agricultural establishments to improve the health of people in North Dakota and to enhance its economic growth.

Duties & Responsibilities

Preservation (embalming) and storage of donors

  • Adhere to basic embalming procedure.
  • Make appropriate decisions beyond basic procedure to ensure donors are embalmed proficiently for teaching purposes. Inquiry of assistance from Manager of Deeded Body Program if necessary
  • Take necessary steps once embalming is complete to ensure donors are properly prepared for storage before classroom use.
  • Placement of donors in storage with inventory update as to location of donor.

Perform duties pertaining to data management for Deeded Body Program

  • Assist with receipts of inquiries.
  • Assist with communications with interested and registered donors.
  • Assist with assignment of registration numbers to donors and documentation of current donor location.
  • Verify of accurate records of donor files in Versatile software system.
  • Maintain availability for necessary Deeded Body Program tasks in absence of Manager.

Departmental maintenance duties

  • Prepare donors for transport to crematorium, cleaning of classroom tables, placement of new donors in tables.
  • Maintain morgue (i.e., keeping morgue clean and orderly).
  • Maintain classroom (i.e., keeping labs supplied with cadaveric materials, etc.).
  • Maintain lab specimens for classes including prosections.
  • Maintain a level of cooperativeness (i.e., misc. tasks as asked by staff and faculty).

Assists with receiving of donors into the Deeded Body Program

  • In absence of Manager, coordinate delivery times of donors with Funeral Directors.
  • Maintain an appropriate level of availability for donor delivery.
  • Maintain good relationships with funeral homes.
  • Communicate with funeral homes, donors, and families regarding particulars of procedure, transit of protocol of the Deeded Body Program.
  • Occasionally be available by cell phone for after-hours questions concerning the Deeded Body Program.

Maintenance of the integrity and organization of the organs and whole bodies

  • Assist with coordination of the removal and labeling of isolated cadaveric material to be used for teaching in the classrooms.
  • Assist with organization of donor selection, placement, and retention prior to, and following classroom study.
  • Assist with coordination with Directors of Gross Anatomical courses in the UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences (Medicine, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Undergraduate (ANAT204) regarding donor whole body or cadaveric material requests.
  • Assist with planning and day of the triennial internment service.

Transporting of donors

  • Assist in the transportation of donors to the crematorium.
  • Assist in the transport and placement of donors in off-campus teaching facilities.

Retrieval of donors from either the airport or train station when required

  • Accompany the Manager of the Deeded Body Program in retrieving donors from the airport or train station.

Minimum Requirements
  • Associates degree in Biology, Chemistry, or Laboratory Sciences
  • Completion of a Human Anatomy Course receiving a passing grade.
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Successful completion of criminal history records check.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with records management software such as Versatile.
  • Embalming experience.
Minimum Hiring Salary/Position Classification

Minimum starting salary: $37,000, Non-Exempt, Full-Time, Benefited

Work Schedule/Start Date

Anticipated start date October 1, 2021 (sooner if possible)

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 40 hours per week
