Job Summary:

Responsible for the overall operations of the laboratory.

Essential Key Responsibilities:

  • Manages day-to-day laboratory operations of the practice and establishes guidelines to prioritize work production evaluate effectiveness and improve the quality of services provided.
  • Coordinates activities of personnel engaged in collecting, testing and analyzing specimens in order to provide diagnostics information to pathologist.
  • Develops laboratory manuals, policies and procedures to improve operating efficiency and effectiveness of medical services.
  • Maintains the quality assurance program, documents annual competency assessments for technical staff, reviews testing results to ensure quality of laboratory test results, and evaluates inter lab quality control reports.
  • Routinely evaluates and monitors laboratory expenses by practice and department and implements appropriate actions based on variance to trends and budgets.
  • Responsible for recruitment, hiring, training, orientation, discipline and evaluation of technical associates.
  • Assures proper maintenance of laboratory and office equipment and approves ordering supplies and services.
  • Delegate's authority, prioritizes work activities, resolves problems, prepares schedules, and sets deadlines to ensure timely completion of work.
  • Provides guidance, resources, and support to Physicians, management and associates in the practice.
  • Controls staffing costs and growth by evaluating staffing ratios, competencies and requirements.
  • Assists management and physician leadership in developing short and long range plans for the practice to improve the quality of services provided.
  • Assists with the development of operational plans and budgets, guides fiscal management of departments, and ensures that periodic and year-end goals are attained.
  • Works as a liaison with billing, IT and other functional areas to resolve issues promptly.
  • Ensures that all environmental issues, including biomedical and facility support, are addressed timely and appropriately.
  • Coordinates facility changes needed to add new tests or expand operations.
  • Maintains strictest confidentiality.
  • Complies with all State, Federal, professional regulations as well as company and departmental rules, polices, and procedural manuals.
  • Adherence to CAP, CLIA, State Regulations, HIPAA, Safety and OSHA Regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Associates Degree in the field of Laboratory Science or equivalent under the 1988 Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) guidelines of high complexity testing.
  • State licensure, if applicable.
  • Board of Certification (BOC) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).


  • Minimum of 5 years of supervisory experience.


  • Successful completion of a pre-employment visual color discrimination test.
  • Successful completion of annual education units per state licensure and/or ASCP guidelines.


  • Knowledge of CLIA regulations regarding proficiency testing, quality assurance and quality control.
  • Knowledge of clinical laboratory policies and procedures and laboratory standards to evaluate department and recommend improvement.
  • Knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing to monitor quality control checks and determine needs and evaluate equipment for purchase.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology to communicate with laboratory staff.
  • Knowledge of safety requirements to provide instructions and recognize and correct hazardous conditions.
  • Knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Knowledge of business methods including productivity/workload analysis and scheduling.
  • Skill in performing a full range of laboratory tests and operating a variety of laboratory instrumentation and equipment.
  • Skill in using computer programs and applications.
  • Skill in personnel management and effective training sessions.
  • Skill in appropriate collection/analysis//presentation of staffing, productivity, and cost data on a routine and special-project basis.
  • Ability to analyze workload requirements and schedule personnel appropriately.
  • Ability to listen, read, understand, and follow oral, and written instruction.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to identify and resolve problems.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with employees, physicians, vendors, clients, and external agencies.

Environmental Working Conditions:

  • Laboratory Setting; exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, blood borne pathogens, chemical hazards and sharp instruments.

Physical Requirements:

  • Physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger; handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to focus. Requires visual acuity and normal color perception.


Sonic Anatomic Pathology

This role will have routine access to Protected Health Information (PHI). Employees will be trained on reasonable safeguards and are expected to maintain strict confidentiality, as well as abide by all applicable privacy and security standards. Employees are expected only to access PHI when it is required to fulfill job duties.
