Job Summary

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Handles and processes clinical specimens.
  • Responsible for the execution of molecular biology laboratory experiments as part of multiple ongoing studies.
General Responsibilities
  • Cleans and maintains laboratory equipment.
  • Monitors and inventories laboratory supply levels.
  • Assists with and performs routine laboratory procedures and preparations.
  • Maintains regulatory paperwork.
  • Moves and relocates sensitive equipment as needed.
  • May participate in the disposal of biological or radioactive waste.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required
  • High school diploma or GED.
Preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or other life sciences (BS, BA).
WORK EXPERIENCE

Preferred
  • 1 year of experience in a research lab (work post-graduation, or long term project during undergraduate).
  • Some experience working in a BSL-2 laboratory.
SKILLS

Required
  • Proficient communication skills.
  • Maintains a high degree of professionalism.
  • Demonstrated time management and priority setting skills.
  • Demonstrates a high commitment to quality.
Preferred
  • Knowledge of basic biological concepts.
  • Broad knowledge of laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, heating blocks, and pipets.
  • Ability to work and communicate with a variety of professionals from different fields.
  • Ability to use a pipette with accuracy and precision.
  • Ability to maintain laboratory records.
  • Ability to cross-train on multiple bench top laboratory procedures.
  • Ability to demonstrate good laboratory practices and techniques.
  • Experience in aseptic and sterile techniques.
  • Experience with data analysis and interpretation.
  • Experience in nucleic acid isolation.
  • Experience with grant writing.
  • Experience in qPCR, PCR, or other molecular biology assay techniques.

Working Conditions / Demands

The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
