Position Title: Laboratory Specialist, Aviation Maintenance

Department: Downtown Campus

Rate of Pay: Non-Exempt - B23 - $23.97/hour

Closed Date:  May 23, 2022, 5:00 PM Arizona Time

Position Summary:

The position is available beginning fall 2021. Laboratory Specialists are responsible for the operational sustainment of the aircraft hangar to include all equipment and storage facilities. The position oversees usage of the lab by students, and the preparation of various equipment items, instructional media, and other materials used for class exercises and demonstrations.

The Aviation Department is housed at the Aviation Technology Center of Excellence located just west of Tucson International Airport. The #1 goal of Aviation faculty and staff is to provide world-class service and training to our diverse student body. We currently offer training for aspiring Airframe and Powerplant mechanics, Avionics Technicians, and Structural Repair technicians; and have plans to expand program offerings in the areas of Nondestructive Testing, Unmanned Aircraft Systems, and Professional Pilot Training.

This position may require evening hours to meet operational and educational needs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate lab use for students during operating hours
  • Prepare, maintain, and distribute various equipment items, instructional media, and other materials used for class exercises and demonstrations
  • Communicate and coordinate with faculty, staff, and students regarding lab resources and procedures, including waste disposal, and ensuring guidelines are adhered to
  • Plan, design, coordinate, and recommend facility changes and equipment needs to include: research of new products and technology, communicate with internal departments and outside vendors, make recommendations for purchases, and order products
  • Oversee inventory of supplies, equipment, and other materials needed for the daily operations of the lab
  • Maintain a clean and sanitary workplace; clean equipment
  • Perform preventive maintenance or minor repairs on laboratory equipment; assemble and test new equipment; and perform technical troubleshooting of laboratory equipment and exercises
  • Monitor department budget for usage, accuracy, and discrepancies
  • Propose, develop, and implement new laboratory procedures
  • Research new technology for the lab, recommend best products, and planning for the implementation of new products
  • Perform other duties of a similar nature or level as required
 

Job Requirements:
  • FAA Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) certification and
  • Possession of a valid Arizona Driver's License and demonstration of an acceptable driving record
or
  • Ability to obtain A&P certification within the new hire probationary period and
  • Possession of a valid Arizona Driver's License and demonstration of an acceptable driving record
or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above and
  • Possession of a valid Arizona Driver's License and demonstration of an acceptable driving record
Preferred:
  • Two years non-classroom laboratory experience
The selected candidate will:
  • Work a flexible schedule including afternoons and evenings as needed to meet student demand
  • Possibly work at more than one Pima Community College Campus, depending on need

  • Equipment repair and maintenance
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, faculty, supervisor, the general public, etc.
