  • Manage product development activities for a single product, technical specialty/product function, or process achieving both the short and long-term strategy to meet or exceed quality, functionality, the voice of the customer, and competitive edge requirements
  • Proficient at Creo Parametric and/or other computer engineering tools
  • Manage a small team that may include Engineers, Engineering Technicians, and Co-op Students

Resource planning and management
  • Working with and in ERP systems as part of Engineering responsibilities
  • Assist in developing specifications, program plans, milestones, major reviews, schedules, etc.
  • The Lead Engineer directs, designs, and develops products to meet the following objectives:
    • Safe, reliable, and efficient products that meet customer requirements.
    • Product design is capable of being economically manufactured and profitably sold in a competitive worldwide market
    • Completion of the development projects on time within budget
    • Integrate technologies in product and development processes
    • The Lead Engineer is also responsible for all other engineering activities, including sustainment, for all assigned products, as well as providing support to the Engineering Manager as required
    • Provides support to cross-functional teams e.g. Project Management, Production, Quality, Sales, Customer Service, Supply & Logistics to ensure end-to-end success

Role & Responsibility

Employee Engagement and Talent Management
  • Manage a small team which may include engineers, engineering technicians, and co-op students
  • Efficiently organize the major tasks and goals for direct reports and supporting personnel
  • Working with the Engineering Manager and Project Manager, Actively monitor projects and make appropriate personnel and resource changes to meet the project goals
  • Inspire, engage, and empower employees to create a culture of creativity, innovation, and timely development of world-class products
  • Outline strategy for employee growth, development, and succession planning
  • Identify key competencies and skills needed to build a diverse team and evaluate and select new employees to achieve assigned goals
  • Identify and remove roadblocks on projects so employees can effectively execute project plans
  • Demonstrate how to build relationships across engineering and other departments to enhance collaboration
  • Recognize team failures as learning opportunities and coach employees through project hurdles
Innovation
  • Support the ideation process to initiate new ideas for future and existing products for the Long Range Plan (LRP)
  • Use innovative approaches to solving problems, engaging team, devising courses of action for the development of new techniques or processes, and refashioning existing courses of action where the opportunity for innovation is limited by a large volume of accepted practice
  • Foster a culture of creativity and support diversity of thought, innovation, and excellence within the department. Sponsor and/or lead innovation challenges and events
Strategic Engineering Design
  • Drive the product development initiatives for a single product, product function, or stage in the product design process including preparing and managing the development activity and budget per schedules outlined in the Annual Operating Plan (AOP) and Long Range Plan (LRP)
  • Collaborate with other functional areas and participate in product management and operational meetings on the development status of major projects to determine if products are ready for production
  • Identify and drive continuous improvement in the product development process, engineering systems, and database of technical specifications
  • Ensure the team responds to and solves field problems and warranty issues for the assigned product line. Improve product quality, reliability and system cost through warranty and quality cost improvement programs
Business Acumen
  • Responsible for the overall financial impact of the development of a single product, product function, and/or phase
  • Understands business implications of decisions
  • Aligns the work of the engineering teams with the AOP and LRP
  • Ensures the team is designing for manufacturability and impact of the final cost of the product to the customer
  • Propose and manage the annual budget to achieve product development goals in North America
  • Always maintain a global perspective for new product development so that it meets the criteria to manufacture and distribution worldwide
  • Provide strategic leadership in the product development life cycle based on knowledge and history of the product and the company's annual goals

Job Requirement

  • A Hands on approach to Product development and the processes required to bring the job from ideation to product launch
  • Experience working with ERP and PDM/PLM system
  • Experience leading and developing engineering teams or have had >2 years previous experience in a Design Engineering role with demonstrated Team lead competencies in the development of a single product, product function and/or product improvement/optimization effort and is looking to develop to the next level
  • A clear understanding of the product development and validation processes and customer needs to be achieved through experience with one or more of the company's products, dealers, and customers
  • Ability to build strong relationships with other functions of the organizations
  • Ability to develop and mentor engineers at various levels in their careers
  • A creative and visionary approach to projects with the ability to influence innovation across multiple organizations and levels through technical aptitude and understanding of the team's strengths
  • Strong capacity for leading change, dealing with ambiguity and providing creative solutions, and influencing multi-discipline teams with data, scientific reasoning, and strong coaching skills
  • Basic project management methodologies and tools experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Agricultural, etc..) A Master's Degree in Business Administrative or similar will also be considered
  • 7 - 10 years of experience
  • Travel: < 10%
