Position Summary

OPEN TO CURRENT SDSU EMPLOYEES ONLY

Instructional Technology Services (ITS) provides support and leadership to the university in the effective uses of technologies to enhance teaching and learning, to create effective learning environments, and to facilitate research and strategic initiatives. ITS employs 18 staff and four administrators.

Under general supervision of the Director and Associate Director, the Learning Technologies Manager assists with the management of Instructional Technology Services Learning Technologies portfolio and team. The ITS Learning Technologies team provides training and support for SDSU's online learning environments, including the learning management system, assessment tools, and other academic technology technologies. This work will be done in consultation with SDSU faculty, staff and students. Incumbent will be responsible for the management of the Instructional Design and Academic Media teams, interact on a daily basis with ITS service units, and work with SDSU faculty, staff and administrators as required.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base) benefits-eligible, at-will position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The individual hired into this role will work on-campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in computer science, computer engineering, information systems, educational technology, communications, telecommunications, film and new media, or related field.
  • Three years of increasing technical (systems administration, integration, support and/or programming, and/or multimedia development) experience.
  • One year of supervisory responsibilities, preferably in a university environment.
  • Skill in consensus management, including successful interactions with diverse groups.
  • Clear and balanced vision of how technology can be used to support teaching and learning.
  • Effective project and staff management skills.
  • Strong diplomatic skills, with the ability to foster collaboration and cooperation among all constituents within a complex university environment.
  • Demonstrated record of success in developing and maintaining strong working relationships with faculty, students, staff (particularly academic technology staff), administrators, and both internal and external partners.

License/Certification Required

  • Valid California driver's license or the ability to obtain one within 10 days of hire.
  • Certification of completion of driver safety training as required by CSU Office of Risk Management must be obtained as soon as possible after hire date.

Specialized Qualifications

Project Management

  • Requires basic knowledge of project management principles, theories, and concepts.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. Experience in written and verbal communication that convey complex or technical content into understandable terms that suit the intended audience.
  • Skill in writing technical and non-technical project materials including project plans, timelines, vendor agreements and status reports.
  • Knowledge of and experience using project management visualization software.
  • Ability to resolve conflicting high-priority requirements.
  • Ability to communicate the needs of others effectively.
  • Ability to gather and analyze facts, draw conclusions, define problems, and suggest solutions.
  • Ability to conduct training and informational sessions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, build consensus, facilitate working sessions, and negotiate solutions and alternatives.

Instructional Design

  • Knowledge of trends in the field such as learning analytics and online collaboration tools.
  • Ability to apply instructional design theories and methodologies.
  • Experience working with and guiding instructors with competing priorities and a wide-range of skill levels for using technology in the service of teaching and learning.

Classroom Technologies

  • Experience in the design of integrated instructional technology systems.
  • Knowledge of analog and digital technologies and the ability to appropriately apply them in the design, installation and maintenance of smart classroom systems.
  • Knowledge of quality assurance methodologies applicable to smart classroom systems.

Media Production

  • Knowledge of a variety of software applications related to the integration of technology in instruction (e.g., productivity tools, web editing tools, digital imaging, multimedia authoring, learning management systems, e-portfolios, communication tools, etc.).
  • Knowledge of the laws, guidelines, and principles associated with producing and providing accessible instructional materials and web-based content.

Training and User Support

  • Ability to apply consultative skills to assess user needs and provide appropriate support.
  • Ability to apply interpersonal and communication skills in working with staff and users to assess needs and provide solutions.
  • Ability to lead, moderate, and guide large and small groups with clear objectives.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Educational Technology or related discipline.
  • Four or more years of experience providing academic technology support in a higher education setting.
  • Extensive knowledge of best practices in technology applications in teaching and learning and in the delivery of academic technology support services.
  • Extensive knowledge of trends and future directions of technology in the learning environment
  • Demonstrated record of commitment to ongoing professional development on the part of self, technical staff, faculty, and other campus constituents.

SDSU COVID-19 Vaccine Policy

In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. Individuals are considered fully vaccinated for five months after their final dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine or for two months after receiving the only dose of a single-dose vaccine. Afterward a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated.

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university's secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU's COVID-19 testing program.

Supplemental Information
