Locomotive Materials Technical Advisor (MTA) - Commerce, CA

The Materials Technical Advisor (MTA) is a hybrid position that combines the best of both worlds, between our Materials Management Specialists and Locomotive Maintenance Technical Advisors.

Whether it's managing critical inventory or advising on repairs, this position provides a full suite of service to our customers - the largest railroad operators in the United States.

What You'll Do

Materials Management:

  • Responsible for material planning and inventory metrics at a customer railroad maintenance facility
  • Monitors the results of changes to the inventory plan/forecast and recommend modifications
  • Plans for prevention of excess inventory and stock outs
  • Work with all levels of personnel (hourly, supervisory, and general foreperson) in resolving issues, tracking material availability, and advising on material usage
  • Work with customers externally and internally to identify new opportunities to improve our current processes
  • May also include, Lead Inquiry to Order (ITO) processes through Order to Remittance (OTR)
  • Deliver business sales, contribution margin, develop proposals; negotiate with customers; drive competitive pricing
  • Major contribution to the development of an operational year plan for own department activities of the team
  • Suggest improvements in products, processes and procedures
  • Work together with people from the business unit
  • Contacts are under guidance and/or geared towards specifying activities, planning of activities and giving explanations on technical issues
  • Work on the basis of predefined contracts and frameworks
  • Some latitude to deviate from those conditions

Technical Advisor (Locomotive Maintenance)
  • Provide clear communication and technical guidance to railroad employees and management to include troubleshooting, material assistance, tooling and / or locomotive status, safety procedures, productivity and process improvements, and contract requirement clarification.
  • Coordinate and provide instruction on key programs and procedures related to locomotive maintenance and modifications.
  • Provide technical mentorship to teams, including troubleshooting, material handling, tooling, safety procedures, and contract requirement clarification
  • Provide clear communication to employees, customer management, and Wabtec management on work to be performed, equipment status, efficiency, and process improvements.
  • Partner with teams to promote, maintain, and drive continuous improvement in safe work practices while supervising productivity, quality assurance, and adherence to contract requirements
  • Ensure compliance with all governmental regulations, OSHA work practices, and industry / site specific work rules
  • Work with employees and management on establishing production plans for labor, material, and logistics
  • Work with various software systems to run material, labor plans, and other systemic requirements

Qualifications/Requirements
  • Bachelors' degree in a technical discipline from an accredited college or university
  • Or 4+ years of military experience (preferably in a maintenance related specialty)
  • Or a High School Diploma / GED with a minimum of 4 years of operations experience
  • Or associate degree in technical discipline with a minimum of 2 years professional work experience
  • Willingness and ability to work various shifts, various days, and work in shop environment
  • Proficiency in MS office applications
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Validated analytical and quality improvement ability
  • Ability to interface at all levels of the organization, both internally and externally
  • The ability to maintain reliable and predictable attendance
  • A high level of dependability, a great attitude, and an ability to work well with a team towards achieving a common goal
