Primary Function of Position:

The Manager of Accessory Design will lead a team that develop and support innovative accessories for the Intuitive da Vinci Surgical System. He or she must excel in a high-energy team environment and be capable of making sound decisions when faced with the time pressures and incomplete information typical of new product development. The successful candidate must have strong technical depth in relevant areas, and have a track record of successful product development efforts.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Manage a team of senior and entry-level mechanical design engineers
    • Recruit and hire qualified team members as required
    • Train and develop existing team members
    • Ensure team members are motivated, encouraged and enthusiastic
    • Provide technical advice and mentoring
    • Assess employee performance and provide coaching to improve performance
  • Lead a cross functional team to optimize performance, manufacturability and reliability of existing and future accessories
    • Establish group objectives and individual work goals
    • Assign tasks, set priorities, and track progress
    • Support project planning and management goals
  • Work closely with Marketing and Clinical Development Engineering to characterize and document product requirements for next generation products
  • Work closely with the PMO group to align on project plans and collaborate with shared resources
  • Ensure team’s awareness of customer needs and requirements – provide leadership in developing new device concepts as well as continuously improving existing designs to meet those needs
  • Support the teams generation of formal design documentation, review, and control
    • Develop product functional and design specifications
    • Hold design reviews and help document outcomes
    • Develop product architectures
    • Develop and maintain updates to Design History Files per FDA requirements
  • Provide rapid development and iterative design support for the testing of new technology
  • Promote accessories that balance clinical performance with manufacturing efficiency
  • Form and maintain strong partnerships with cross functional partners in parallel organizations
  • Supply chain strategy and management

Skill/Job Requirements:

  • Minimum BSME required, MSME preferred
  • Minimum 6 years of experience with device design; medical device preferred
  • Management experience preferred
  • Proven ability to work well in a team environment
  • Knowledge of ISO requirements and GMP guidelines; experience with FDA regulations and medical device design control strongly desired
  • Comfortable with all phases of the product development lifecycle including design, implementation, debug, verification, qualification, and launch
  • Familiarity with sterilization processes and designing single use devices
  • Familiarity with small part assembly and manufacture
  • A passion for creating robust and reliable products
  • An excitement to get to the bottom of challenging technical problems
  • Mechanical design and analysis skills, including statics, dynamics, kinematics, strength of materials and stress analysis
  • Good communication and documentation skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of component manufacturing processes (including injection molding, machining, MIM, Stamping, heat treatment, etc.)
