Technology Services has a position for an IT Manager/Admin Coordinator for the Plant Engineering Infrastructure Group. This position is responsible for overseeing the work of the Plant Engineers who provide both inside and outside plant design for new construction and remodel projects. Successful candidates will have a basic knowledge of Autocad, knowledge of NEC codes and Campus Standards. Management experience and a demonstrated ability to keep records is required. This position reports to the Director of Enterprise Infrastructure.

PRIMARY POSITION FUNCTION/SUMMARY:

The function of this position is to serve as the manager of the Technology Services Plant Engineering team, which includes supervisory duties of Plant Engineering staff, creating policies, procedures, and goals for the team, service management of Plant Professional Services, coordination of data and telecommunication infrastructure designs, and working closely with other teams, units, contractors, and relevant personnel to ensure excellent service delivery.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervision and Management:

  • Supervising staff assigned to the team.
  • Providing coaching and career development guidance to assigned staff.
  • Using performance management best practices to help staff be successful individually and in a team environment.
  • Overseeing the services of the team to ensure quality, standards, and best practices are met.
Team and Unit Leadership:
  • Participating in IT Infrastructure management meetings and cross-collaborating with other teams necessary to ensure reliable service delivery.
  • Leading the Plant Engineering team through new projects and initiatives, as well as adapting to new technologies, methods, standards, and best practices to improve service delivery.
  • Advising the IT Infrastructure director on issues, solutions, and changes relevant to the team and service area.
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with stakeholders, such as campus units, architects, engineers, and contractors.
Service Management and Delivery:
  • Representing Plant Engineering, IT Infrastructure, and Technology Services in meetings and events with customers, stakeholders, and peer institutions.
  • Working with team staff to ensure plant engineering designs and quality assurance tests follow industry codes and standards.
  • Working with team staff to provide cost estimates related to communications infrastructure consisting of the installation of inside plant media, security cameras, and professional services.
  • Preparing necessary reports and compiling information for customer, Technology Services leadership, and campus stakeholders, as needed.
  • Communicating with customers and stakeholders to ensure strong relationships by providing status updates, resolving service issues, and other information as needed.
  • Ensuring records, drawings, designs, and other outputs of the team are retained and organized appropriately.
  • Review and revised University of Illinois Facilities Standards and drawings that pertain to information technology.
  • Maintain and oversee changes to the fiber, copper, and manhole record books.
Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Required:

Experience:

Required:
  • Six years of progressively responsible, IT-related work experience, of which at least two are in installation and maintenance of voice, data, or video cabling infrastructure, design and engineering of data, or voice communications infrastructure. College coursework with a concentration in IT, IT management, or closely related discipline may substitute for experience:
    • 60 semester hours or Associate's Degree for one year
    • 90 semester hours for two years or
    • 120 semester hours or Bachelor's Degree for three years.
  • Two years of total work experience in a supervisory or lead worker capacity in an IT environment.

Preferred:
  • Supervisory experience at a higher education institution

Training, Licenses or Certifications:

Required:
  • Valid driver's license
Preferred:
  • A valid certification issued by BISCI (any)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Knowledge of the systems and operations used within the areas and departments of responsibility.
  • Ability to oversee and coordinate activities of assigned staff.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with other colleagues, supervisors, administrative staff, and other campus/agency units.
  • Ability to identify and resolve technical and personnel problems.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and professionally interact with all staff levels.

Environmental Demands:

Work outside normal business hours may be necessary. The Plant Engineering Manager will visit work sites, which include offices, basements, telecommunication nodes, outside plant infrastructure, and equipment closets. Most work is performed in office, but some field site visits will be required, and the use of a departmental vehicle is necessary (must have a valid driver's license).

This is a full-time Civil Service IT Manager/Administrative Coordinator position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after May 26, 2021. Salary is commensurate with experience.
