PRIMARY POSITION FUNCTION/SUMMARY:

The Cancer Center at Illinois seeks a Marketing and Outreach Specialist to provide input on, and implement, community engagement opportunities in support of the mission and priorities of the Cancer Center at Illinois. This position will work closely with the Communications Team to initiate and coordinate marketing and outreach efforts designed for internal and external CCIL audiences.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

MARKETING & STRATEGY

  • Work closely with the Communications team and other relevant University/CCIL Administration to develop marketing campaigns and strategies.

  • Provide input on strategy and help make recommendations and decisions to CCIL Communications on the best forms of media for specific promotions and campaigns based on direction.
  • Research, collect, and analyze data on current and potential target audiences to aid in the development and evaluation of marketing and outreach activities Increase CCIL audience engagement across communication platforms such as social media, newsletters, and digital media platforms.
  • Build networks with business, non-profit, and community partners to promote the CCIL research activities and accomplishments. Coordinate with the Communications Manager, communications interns, writers, printers, photographers, and graphic designers. Constantly help strengthen relationships within the advertising and campus community.
  • Serve as a brand ambassador to promote the CCIL among key stakeholders and celebrate institutional successes.
  • Initiate discussions with the internal team around user research findings, outlining audience needs, specific pain points, and potential solutions.

OUTREACH MANAGEMENT & COORDINATION

  • Identify opportunities to support organizational initiatives; coordinate the creation, implementation, and execution of events and activities.
  • Coordinate with CCIL Administration and Advancement staff to provide appropriate support for fundraising materials, activities, stewardship information, etc. Coordinate and maintain relationships with the marketing staff of external cancer related organizations and community organizations.
  • Build and foster relationships with the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics (DIA); execute outreach activities at DIA events.

  • Develop press releases, brochures, social media content, and other marketing materials; assist with communication efforts that support CCIL special events, workshops, and conferences.
  • Manage public relations opportunities related to CCIL marketing and outreach activities, attend events to promote the CCIL; conduct informational presentations about the CCIL.

MISCELLANEOUS

  • Perform other duties as needed to enhance and foster the goals and mission of CCIL.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, Advertising, Public Relations, Journalism, External Relations, or related field. Two years of professional work experience in marketing, communications, public relations, community outreach, brand management, or a related professional field.

Preferred:

The ideal candidate will also demonstrate the following qualifications: Public university experience providing human resources support Experience in a higher education marketing position. Demonstrated experience in social media content creation and management. Demonstrated experience creating, designing, and editing print and digital work and publications. Superior written, organizational, communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills to communicate complex subjects to groups with various levels of knowledge and management levels. Creative ability to tell a story through the use of electronic and print media. Ability to collaborate effectively and enthusiastically in a team. Ability to multi-task and manage complex projects in a deadline-driven environment.

SALARY AND APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

This is a full-time Civil Service Marketing Associate position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close of the search. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
