Department Information

Capital Planning and Facilities works to ensure that IU campuses are beautiful, functional, and sustainable -- supporting excellence in teaching, learning, research, and community engagement across the entire university. Part of the Capital Projects unit, our team of licensed engineers and skilled systems designers provides mechanical and electrical engineering services and handles special engineering projects for all IU campuses. Job Summary

Prepare design documents (plans and specifications) for mechanical systems. Research and interpret current state and federal codes and design standards as well as University standards. Make decisions based on the proper application of these standards using knowledge and expertise to all design concepts and renovations. Manage assigned projects and see through to completion. Analyze, review and problem solve issues. Perform field surveys and project inspections. Prepare project cost estimates. Provide technical advice to colleagues and staff across campuses. Assist in developing IU engineering design standards.

Required Qualifications

This position is posted at the Advanced Career Level but may be filled at the Career Career Level depending on the candidate's qualifications. Although they will be similar, the duties and responsibilities may differ if filled at the lower rank. Please see the qualifications for each level listed below.

Advanced Level Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or mechanical engineering technology and five years of experience in a relevant field.

Possess a valid driver's license with the ability to be insured by Indiana University, upon date of hire.

Ability to work in a safe and efficient manner. Knowledge of all related codes including: national fire codes, ADA requirements, Indiana building and mechanical codes, and ASHRAE and SMACNA standards. Ability to operate a computer, including full literacy in Microsoft products (including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). Familiarity with Autodesk products (including AutoCAD, Revit). Other equipment includes CO2 monitor, hot wire anemometer, RPM meter, sound meter, digital cameras, calculator, liquid flow meters, airflow meters, maintenance carts, printers, copiers, plotters, AutoCAD software, engineering load calculating software, vendor equipment selection software, etc.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge and application of all standards governing architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and CAD standards and use of EMS diagrams. Knowledge of higher education facilities and/or AutoCAD drawing. P.E. Licensure.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. This role frequently requires the ability to handle cash and equipment. This role frequently requires the ability to remain stationary and ascend/descend ladders/stairs. This role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds. The role requires the ability to detect items in close proximity as well as far away; discern between colors; detect objects in peripheral space of self; discern items in detail; and to have good depth perception. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
