Occ Summary

Coordinate and participate in a variety of comple x technical tasks inthe performance of laboratory tests to obtain data f or use in thediagnosis and treatment of disease.


Work Perfor med

Perform routine tests in clinical laboratories for use in the treatmentand diagnosis of disease using standard techniques and equipme nt;perform related duties in laboratory to include storing and labelings pecimens and using manual and automatic equipment to prepare specimensan d perform analytical tests.Prepare sterile media in plates, jars or test tubes for use in growingbacterial cultures; incubate culture for specif ic times at prescribedtemperatures.Understand and comply with laboratory Quality Control and QualityAssurance policies and procedures for instru mentation and testing.Prepare solutions, reagents and stains, following standard laboratoryformulas and procedures.Maintain detailed records of tests performed and report laboratory testresults to appropriate personn el; recognize Quality Control shifts andtrends and take appropriate acti on whenever necessary.Calibrate and perform routine maintenance on test equipment, clean andsterilize laboratory equipment, glassware and instru ments, maintainlaboratory supply of chemicals and glassware; perform rou tinemaintenance on equipment.Collect bloodspecimens from patients using venipuncture, or heel orfinger stick; carry out Point-of-Care Testing w aived tests andurinalysis without microscopeUtilize various hospital and laboratory information systems andsoftware.Interact in a professional a nd courteous manner with doctors, nurses,and other personnel to provide technical guidance and address concerns.Perform other related duties inc idental to the work described herein.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Experience involving patient contact, customer service in a medicalsetting, strong communication skills, both verbal and writte n.Basic knowledge of medical terminology.Working knowledge of laboratory and hospital computer systems ishelpful.Basic knowledge of laboratory s afety and infection control proceduresand practices including standard p recautions and hazardous chemicalhandling.Ability to demonstrate require d dexterity, knowledge, and ability tocomplete assigned laboratory tasks and skills, attention to detail andcompliance with all appropriate regu latory and safety requirements.Ability to maintain effective working rel ationships with otheremployees.


Minimum Qualifications


Education

AA, AS or AD Degree, BS Degree.


Experience

MLT with >= 2 years of experience. No experience is required for Non-Cert Medical technologist (meeting CLIA requirements).


Degrees, Licensures, Certifications

Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician by a nationally recognized board/agency (required). Employees with a Bachelor's degree and meeting CLIA requirements are exempt from the certification requirement.
