JOB SUMMARY:
Bridgewater College is seeking a full-time Metadata Librarian. This position oversees and manages metadata and cataloging of collections in the Forrer Learning Commons. This position reports to the Director of the Forrer Learning Commons. This is an exempt, 12-month position.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develops, implements, and maintains workflows, procedures, and documentation for all metadata management.
  • Performs original, copy, and complex cataloging of materials, including physical and electronic books, media, and serials.
  • Manages reclassification of collections from Dewey Decimal Classification to Library of Congress Classification.
  • Provides quality control of metadata to maximize discoverability of collections complying with local and national standards for normalization and optimizing metadata.
  • Manages deselection and donation processing.
  • Supports other library projects that hold metadata components, such as Special Collections.
  • Manages related cataloging and collection statistics, digital, and print.
  • Collaborates with the Systems Librarian for managing and troubleshooting the online catalog system.
  • Manages e-resources lifecycle:
    • In collaboration with the Systems Librarian, manage, maintain, and improve discovery of electronic resources via library services platforms, vendor services and software, and knowledge bases for internal and external users.
    • Investigate trends, best practices, and initiatives affecting metadata standards for e-resource management with the aim of adopting them at Bridgewater College.
  • Hires, supervises, and trains student staff working in Technical Services as appropriate.
  • Uses strong customer service skills to shape workflows to public service programs.
  • Collaborates with librarians on collection development.
  • Serves as a liaison to academic departments.
  • Provides reference and research support virtually and in person including evening and weekend hours as necessary.
  • Demonstrates a positive, collaborative attitude with excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills with all faculty and staff.
  • Demonstrates ability to work independently and to manage a complex workload in a timely and effective manner with minimum supervision with initiative and flexibility.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

  • ALA-accredited master's degree in Library or Information Science required.
  • Experience with cataloging and metadata management.
  • Experience with integrated library systems/library platforms, bibliographic knowledge bases, and a working knowledge of discovery layers.
  • Familiarity with an integrated library system, networks, library operations, especially with OCLC WMS.
  • Knowledge of established and emerging current national and international metadata standards and formats such as AACR/RDA, MARC, XML, and familiarity with BIBFRAME and Linked data.
  • Practical knowledge of current cataloging procedures and principles.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Skills in supervising subordinate staff, especially 18-21 year-old adults.
  • Computer technology for communication, data gathering and reporting.

GENERAL INFORMATION: Bridgewater College was founded in 1880 as the first coeducational college in Virginia. Bridgewater offers bachelor's degrees in approximately 60 majors and minors, along with four graduate programs, pre-professional programs such as medicine and law, and teacher licensure. The College is a member of NCAA Division III and the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, with 23 intercollegiate athletic teams. The vibrant residential campus is located in the town of Bridgewater, Virginia, near the city of Harrisonburg in the center of the Shenandoah Valley.
