General Summary:

Under the supervision of the Donor Recruitment Supervisor, the employee operates passenger coach vehicles, Blood Donor Van and Blood Mobile in accordance with an assignment schedule . Responsible for the overall maintenances, permitting and licensing of vehicle. Inspects, maintains, and operates vehicles as mandated by Partners Healthcare System policies, and applicable federal, state, and local laws. Organizes and reviews directions to ensure efficiency and accuracy. Assists Blood Donor Collection staff in the care of donors before, during and after WB collection. Performs post-collection handling of whole blood units, packaging and placing packs in cooler for transport. Assists the Charge RN with adverse donor reactions, both on the bus and inside the sponsor's work site. Calls Emergency Medical Services when necessary. Ensures safety of donors and staff during bus drives.

May perform whole blood phlebotomy, if qualified.

Principle Responsibilities:

  • Operates vehicles in accordance with Partners Healthcare System policies as well as in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  • Inspects vehicles at the beginning and end of each shift to ensure operating effectiveness. (A walk-around inspection of all safety-related items is included in the inspection.)
  • Assesses and reports any bus damage, inoperative or inoperable bus equipment to the Donor Recruitment Supervisor, Administrative Director Joint Program in Transfusion Medicine Brigham and Women's Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Nursing Director- Kraft Family Blood Donor Center immediately
  • Maintains the safety and integrity of the interior of the vehicle while the vehicle is under operator's control.
  • Transports donor staff safely to the Blood Donation site on an established route as needed
  • When arriving at destinations, levels the bus with leveling jacks, checks the wheels, puts the stairs down at the entrance, removes all snow and ice from bus stairs, whenever necessary, to ensure the safety of the donors and the staff.
  • Set up and maintains snack supplies in donor refreshment area
  • Oversees van maintenance/cleaning in accordance with donor center policy, including licensing documentation required by government agencies and the hospital.
  • Maintains van travel/maintenance log, equipment, restocks and packs supplies for all drives.
  • Maintains petty cash for van and equipment expenditures.
  • Loads/unloads van and sets up/breaks down equipment and supplies at off-site facility.
  • Collaborates with sponsors' building management or security at off-site facilities when necessary.
  • Prepares blood packs, segments blood products collected, stores blood in appropriate blood containers and racks all pilot tubes in sequential order, if qualified and appropriate
  • Prepares blood containers for transportation, if qualified and appropriate
  • Performs Whole Blood Phlebotomy, if qualified and appropriate
  • Assists with donor reactions under supervision of nurse-in-charge.
  • Performs computerized donor registration, physical and medical interview information using hospital computer system.
  • At the holding lot, ensures the bus is plugged in to the appropriate outlets in the building.
  • Works with Donor Recruitment Supervisor to maintain schedules and review established routes for efficiency and safety. Arranges for alternate routes if detours are required. Uses discretion to deviate from prescribed routes when environmental conditions and/or special events create traffic congestion.
  • Maintains and stocks Blood Donor Van for use as appropriate
  • Load and setup using the Blood Donor Van and materials as needed
  • Coordinate maintenance on Blood Donor Van
  • Prepare van for Blood Drives as needed
  • Assist with computer and printer set-up and repairs on mobile drives as requested by the Charge Nurse
  • Other duties as required.


  • Qualifications
  • High school diploma
  • Current valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL), Class B with an Air Brake Endorsement.
  • Undergoes physical examinations required by CDL regulations (conducted by Employee Health Service)
  • Phlebotomy experience a plus
  • Knowledge of blood borne pathogens and OSHA standards preferred.


  • Skills / Abilities:
  • Excellent communications skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to lift at least 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team member.


  • Working Conditions:
  • Works in various corporate and community environments as well as in the hospital environment.
  • Work performed in air-conditioned donor mobile bus or indoors at various work sites
  • Lifting, standing, walking required.
  • Loading and unloading supplies in supply area
  • Exposure to blood and blood products.
  • Exposure to dust and fumes around bus and in storage areas.
  • Day and "late" shifts. Occasional weekend drives. Shifts can fluctuate due to donor drive requirements.
  • Flexibility in work schedule, including evenings/weekends, is required to meet the needs of the program.
