SUMMARY

The Museum Educator serves as the Lead Educator in the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC), Global Health Odyssey Museum (GHO). This position works in the interactive museum and learning center designed to educate visitors, and particularly young people, about the value of prevention-based public health, while presenting CDC's rich heritage and vast accomplishments. The Museum Educator is responsible for coordinating the design and development of all instructional projects in the GHO, to include tour workshops, the CDC Disease Detective Camp, document programs and professional development training for teachers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Responsible for systematic design of interactive learning modules and instructional materials based on permanent or temporary exhibition content for visitor workshops, teacher and student educational programs, and other educational initiatives undertaken by the CDCM.

Uses documented instructional design principles to define instructional goals, conduct analysis of instruction, identify learner characteristics specific to CDCM visitors, develop performance objectives, select and create methods of instruction, and ultimately develop and institute evaluation tools that can be used by both CDCM educators and thevisiting teachers or group leaders to track the effectiveness of the learning tools.

Responsible to make CDCM more comparable with other Smithsonian Institution affiliated museums in terms of availability ofeffective learning tools for students and teachers, helping to ensure that the story and work of CDC reaches the classroom.

Creates, executes, and evaluates small and large school group field trip experiences for grades six through twelve and oversees workshops.

Coordinates the CDC Disease Detective Camp application process, participant selection, camp curriculum, and every aspect of operations for two sessions of week-long day camps for upcoming high-school juniors and seniors.

Coordinates teacher professional development training, to include Teach Epidemiology and Medical Mysteries.

Coordinates and delivers outreach programs for Title I schools.

Provides subject matter expertise as permanent and temporary exhibits are developed.

Assists with CDC employee/retiree docent program for David J. Sencer CDC Museum, providing guidance to docents.

Schedules and confirms educational tours.

Provides information and orientation for CDC Museum visitors.

Applies the principles of curriculum design to develop and evaluate instructional products.

Identifies and resolves educational needs of target audiences by designing and developing instructional products.

Writes learner outcomes/performance objectives in specific measurable terms.

Serves as educational consultant for all other parts of CDC that provide educational programs.

Develops and coordinates CDC employee/retiree docent program for Global Health Odyssey Museum.

Writes learner outcomes/performance objectives in specific measurable terms.

Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to any training made available by the company.

Plans daily activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description and supervisor's instruction in such a way as to maximize personal output.

Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure safety of self and coworkers. Will report any unsafe conditions and/or practices to the appropriate supervisor and human resources. Will immediately correct any unsafe conditions to the best of own ability.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Bachelor Degree and two (2) years' of related experience and or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

CERTIFICATES / LICENSES / REGISTRATION

Operational knowledge and understanding of CDC systems and standard software

Skilled proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite (i.e., Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, etc.) with ability to quickly grasp specialized software programs

Ability to command and conduct training sessions in a classroom setting with enthusiasm and clarity

Basic and versatile knowledge of proven training methods and techniques related to subject matter

Excellent written and verbal communications skills with ability to prepare quality course materials and presentations

Exceptional skills in researching, writing, reviewing and editing training materials and methods

Ability to plan, organize, coordinate and execute work

Excellent skills in formatting, preparing and editing written / electronic documents with ability to use correct grammar, spelling and usage of the English language

Excellent interpersonal relations skills with ability to effectively interact with others in the performance of assigned duties

Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure

Ability to work both independently and in a team environment

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
