Job Description

Hybrid Work Position: This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively. The employee's role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed or desired.

This position requires an employee to be onsite 1-3 times per week.

The Virtual Design, Development & Validation (VDDV) Engineer for Noise and Vibration (N&V) will perform complex computer simulation for the purpose of predicting N&V performance while developing and integrating solutions to ensure vehicle program requirements are met.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Perform complex analytical simulations to evaluate noise and vibration performance in full vehicle, subsystem and component models as needed.

  • Build, debug and exercise computer simulation models.
  • Generate technical solutions to meet N&V targets with mass and cost efficiency.
  • Present results that comprehend variation and generate actionable recommendations based on simulation to improve and lead the design.
  • Produce and communicate concise summaries for Directors and Chief Engineers.
Multiple areas are covered by the N&V team. Candidates potentially could support any of these areas:
  • Structural N&V using FEA methods (primary software: Optistruct, HyperWorks). Typical lower frequency range analysis between 0-400 Hz.
  • Advanced mid-frequency air and structure borne noise analysis (primary software: Actran). Typical mid-frequency range between 600-2000 Hz.
  • Multi-body dynamics simulations including controls and calibration analysis (primary software: ADAMS)
  • Propulsion mount system analysis, including internal combustion engine (ICE), electric drive units and isolated component sub-systems
  • Airborne noise evaluation using SEA methods. (primary software VA One or SEAM). Typical higher frequency range analysis between 800-5000 Hz.
Perform design optimization and variation analysis. Utilize Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) methodology to identify, drive and optimize critical procedures and designs. Assist in developing new CAE techniques by developing, evaluating and customizing new simulation tools, software, and procedures related to modeling, solver parameters and material characterization.
  • Keep up to date with CAE tools/trends, participate in training and technical workshops.
  • Stay abreast of new technology and competitive products.
Compare CAE models with physical test data as needed to establish accuracy in models, work with test laboratories to measure and interpret physical N&V test data.
  • Carry out Closed-Loop Learning activities to expand CAE capability
  • Plan and implement physical test or development activities to support CAE; and process/analyze physical test data.
Actively collaborate in multiple forums to build relationships & communicate effectively.

Additional Job Description

Minimum Education and Experience Required:
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering or other relevant engineering area or Physics with understanding of material properties as inputs to CAE analysis
  • 1-2 years relevant experience in noise & vibration, acoustics, virtual simulations, structural or dynamics analysis, and/or vehicle design/development

Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Master of Science or PhD Degree in Mechanical Engineering or other relevant engineering area or physics
  • Education or experience preferred to include:
    • Theory and application of vibro-acoustics and finite element analysis; or multi-body dynamics
    • Finite Element Analysis (FEA): structure vibration and coupled acoustics
    • Design, development and optimization of vehicle structures
    • Good understanding of loads and boundary conditions for FEA vehicle level modeling and analysis
    • Vehicle level testing or hardware development experience
  • 2+ years of experience in using CAE methods for structural noise & vibration analysis; including structural optimization and variation analysis
  • Familiarity with a variety of CAE tools (HyperMesh/Optistruct, Actran, ADAMS, etc.)
  • NVH laboratory testing experience with LMS Test.Lab software and/or other data acquisition instrumentation
  • High degree of analytical ability (root cause & failure analysis)
