Exciting opportunity for an AdvancedPractice Provider (APP, NP or PA)to work in a stimulating and cutting-edge environment. The Inpatient Oncologysolid tumor APP provides direct care to the Inpatient solid tumor oncologypopulation on a medical oncology service and will also work in collaborationwith the attending physician, interdisciplinary teams and disease center team,to facilitate the care of oncology patients on the general medical service.Within this role, the APP will work on the oncology unit and be the respondingclinician and be responsible for the care of the patients. Otherresponsibilities include caring for patients throughout their hospitalizationand collaborate with interdisciplinary teams.While delivering continuity of care, including communication and coordinationbetween inpatient and outpatient teams. The APP will work collaboratively withthe inpatient team, attending physician, case management, staff nurses andprimary outpatient oncology team, in order to coordinate daily plan anddischarge plan.

GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEWSTATEMENT:

Develops, implements and evaluates aprogram of specialized health care for a select solid tumor patient population. Promotes acollaborative relationship and effort between the APP team, consult teams andprofessional nurses toward continuity of patient care and efficient use ofresources. Serves as a role model for collaborative advanced practice.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES ANDRESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides direct care to a selectpatient population in collaboration with the physician.

  • Performs and records the patient history and physical exam and discusses findings with the physician.
  • Utilizes advanced nursing knowledge to identify, prevent or solve complex and/or recurring patient care problems.
  • Follows and manages patients (in collaboration with MD) enhancing continuity of care including admitting and discharging.
  • Performs (oversees/assures completion of) specialized procedures particular to the select population mutually agreed upon with collaborating physician.
  • Collaborates with unit staff, physicians and nurses to facilitate a comprehensive plan of care and coordinate resources and write appropriate orders.
  • Maintains and practices in accord with advanced practice guidelines per state and hospital regulations
  • Provides consultation to both nurses and physicians and serves as a resource to staff in area(s) of expertise.
  • Serves on appropriate intra and interdepartmental committees.
  • Develops educational programs within area of expertise.
  • Collaborates with unit staff, Clinical Educators, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Staff Specialists and other health care professionals to meet staff and patient educational needs.
  • Monitors patient outcomes in accordance with defined standards of patient care.
  • Identifies system-wide factors contributing to undesirable outcomes, such as complications, increased length of stay and over utilization of services.
  • Supports and conducts research efforts to advance knowledge and to promote evidence-based practice.
  • Evaluates own practice and program effectiveness.
  • Evaluates current research findings for clinical specialty and determines applicability to unit practice.
  • Responsible for own professional growth and maintenance of required credentials.
  • Maintains the standards and educational requirements specific to the position and licensure.
  • Takes responsibilities for leadership and participation on committees and task forces within patient care services and the hospital.
  • Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills based on current health care practice/research.


Qualifications
  • Prior clinical work experience as advanced practice provider (NP or PA) for two years in an inpatient setting, with preference given to oncology or hospital medicine specialties.
  • Must have or be eligible for, and maintain, a current federal DEA registration and Massachusetts Controlled Substance Registration.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Certification in Advanced Life Support (ACLS)
Nurse Practitioner Specific
    • Master's Degree in Nursing, with acute care focus preferred.
    • National Certification as adult/gero or acute care specialty by ANCC or AANP
    • Valid Massachusetts RN in good standing
    • Previous clinical nursing experience in acute care required. Highly desired within critical care, general medicine or oncology subspecialty
    • Oncology specialty certification or fellowship completion highly desirable
Physician Assistant Specific
  • The appropriate candidate will have successfully completed a graduate level physician assistant program (Master's degree) accredited by the Accreditation and Review Committee for Physician Assistants (ARC-PA) or such other accrediting agency as may qualify a graduate to sit for the NCCPA certifying examination.
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
  • Must hold a current valid license as a physician assistant in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
  • Must have the ability to work in a highly dynamic acute care environment.
  • Must be energetic, self-directed to maintain the highest degree of professional practice and judgement.
  • Must be quality-driven and have a proven ability to be a productive member of a team dedicated to providing excellent evidence-based patient care.
  • Must be and effective communicator with the ability to transfer knowledge (both orally and in writing)
  • Must be able to obtain proficiency of hospital-based computer systems to independently perform daily tasks.
  • Demonstrated competence in specialized area.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Ellison 16 is a 36-bed oncology unit, located on the inpatient hospital (Main) campus.
  • Providers are responsible for 24/7 coverage.
  • Shifts are 13hrs. Days: (6:30am-7:30pm), Evenings: 10am-11:30pm) and Nights: (6:30pm-7:30am). Responsible for covering days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
