LUNDER 10-Heme-Malignancy & Bone Marrow Transplant

The inpatient oncology advanced practice team celebrates its 10-year anniversary and continues to expand, with a demonstrated history of providing exquisite, evidence-based patient care! This is a fantastic opportunity for an Advanced Practice Provider (NP or PA) to work in this invigorating and collaborative environment! The Inpatient Oncology APP on Lunder 10 will provide direct care to inpatient oncology patients, with a focus on hematologic malignancy and cellular therapy patients. The incumbent will work collaboratively with the attending physicians, interdisciplinary teams and ambulatory disease teams to facilitate the care of these patients across the continuum. Within this role, the advanced practice provider will serve as the responding clinician and be responsible for a panel of patients. Other responsibilities include caring for patients throughout their acute hospitalization and fostering collaboration with other professionals within the hospital to facilitate care.

GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

Develops, implements and evaluates a plan of specialized health care for a select oncology patient population. Promotes a professional and collaborative relationship within the advanced practice team, consult teams, and professional nursing staff. Strives to provide continuity of care for patients, while being efficient in use of resources. Serves as a role model for professional advanced practice. Participates in professional development of the team (teaching, committee involvement, quality & safety, etc.)

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides direct care to a select oncology patient population in collaboration with the attending physician.

  • Performs and records the patient history and physical exam and discusses findings with the collaborating physician.
  • Utilizes advanced practice knowledge to identify, prevent or solve complex and/or recurring patient care problems.
  • Follows and manages patients (in collaboration with MD) enhancing continuity of care including admitting and discharging.
  • Performs (oversees/assures completion of) specialized procedures particular to the select oncology population mutually agreed upon with collaborating physician.
  • Collaborates with unit staff and physicians to facilitate a comprehensive plan of care and coordinate resources and write appropriate orders.
  • Maintains and practices in accord with provider guidelines per state and hospital regulations.
  • Provides consultation to both nurses and physicians and serves as a resource to staff in area(s) of expertise.
  • Serves on appropriate intra- and inter-departmental committees.
  • Develops educational programs within area of expertise.
  • Collaborates with unit staff, Clinical Educators, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Staff Specialists and other health care professionals to meet staff and patient educational needs.
  • Monitors patient outcomes in accordance with defined standards of patient care.
  • Identifies system-wide factors contributing to undesirable outcomes, such as complications, increased length of stay and over utilization of services.
  • Supports and conducts research efforts to advance knowledge and to promote research-based practice.
  • Evaluates own practice and program effectiveness.
  • Evaluates current research findings for clinical specialty and determines applicability to unit practice.
  • Responsible for own professional growth and maintenance of required credentials.
  • Maintains the standards and educational requirements specific to the position and licensure.
  • Takes responsibilities for leadership and participation on committees and task forces within patient care services and the hospital.
  • Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills based on current health care practice/research.
  • Is willing to obtain procedural proficiency with bone marrow biopsy and lumbar puncture.


Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Prior clinical work experience as advanced practice provider (NP or PA) for two years. May consider newer graduate APP with 2 or more years' experience on an inpatient acute care unit.
  • Must have or be eligible for, and maintain, a current federal DEA registration and Massachusetts Controlled Substance Registration.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Certification in Advanced Life Support (ACLS)
Nurse Practitioner Specific
    • Master's Degree in Nursing, with acute care focus preferred.
    • National Certification as adult/gero or acute care specialty by ANCC or AANP
    • Valid Massachusetts RN in good standing
    • Previous clinical nursing experience in acute inpatient care required. Highly desired within critical care, general medicine or oncology subspecialty
    • Oncology specialty certification or fellowship completion highly desirable
Physician Assistant Specific
  • The appropriate candidate will have successfully completed a graduate level physician assistant program (Master's degree) accredited by the Accreditation and Review Committee for Physician Assistants (ARC-PA) or such other accrediting agency as may qualify a graduate to sit for the NCCPA certifying examination.
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
  • Must hold a current valid license as a physician assistant in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
  • Must have the ability to work in a highly dynamic acute care environment.
  • Must be energetic, self-directed to maintain the highest degree of professional practice and judgement.
  • Must be quality-driven and have a proven ability to be a productive member of a team dedicated to providing excellent evidence-based patient care.
  • Must be an effective communicator with the ability to transfer knowledge (both orally and in writing)
  • Must be able to demonstrate proficiency of hospital-based computer systems to independently perform daily tasks.
  • Must be able to demonstrate competence in specialized area.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Lunder 10 is a 32-bed oncology unit, located on the inpatient hospital (Main) campus.
  • Providers are responsible for coverage 24/7, including weekends and holidays.
  • Shifts are 13hrs. Day/Night Rotation. Day hours: (6:30am-7:30pm), Night Hours: 6:30pm-7:30am
