The Pre-Admission Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner provides direct care functions including, but not limited to pre-operative history and physical exams, ordering medications and lab testing, and education of the patient and family in regards to pre-surgical assessment. Knowledge necessary to perform these functions include: skills in evaluating laboratory data, EKG, and diagnostic studies interpretation; skills in assessing, planning and implementing a plan of care in anticipation for surgery for patients and families, while collaborating with nursing staff, physicians and ancillary staff, practice protocols as designated in agreement with supervising/collaborating physician.

Education, Training, Experience, Certification and Licensure:
  • Nurse Practitioner First Assist: Current New York State RN license; experience in pertinent areas of nursing practice; graduate of accredited Nurse Practitioner program; Master's Degree in Nursing preferred; National certification as Nurse Practitioner or active pursuit within one year.
  • Physician Assistant: Graduate of accredited Physician Assistant program, Master's Degree preferred; National certification as Physician Assistant or eligible; current New York State PA license or eligible.
  • DEA eligible
  • Participates in orientation and continuing education and updates and maintains knowledge and skills related to specific areas of expertise as applicable, including but not limited to:
    • Acute Care Medicine
    • Emergency Medicine
    • Care of the surgical patient
    • Critical Care Medicine

Work Environment and Hazards:
  • Clinical setting - Exposure Class I

Physical Demands:
  • Medium work: must be able to lift 25 pounds frequently; occasionally lifting maximum of 50 pounds. Will require ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, twist, squat and reach.

Acts as a liaison between patient, hospital staff, physician, and between nursing staff and physician.
