The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Nursing is seeking a Nursing Assistant to perform specific tasks to assist members of the Nursing team in providing patient care under the direct supervision of Registered Nurses.

Burn Treatment Center and Intermediate Care Unit (8 JCP):

This is a 17-bed unit equipped with a state of the art hydrotherapy room for burn/wound dressing care, a pediatric playroom and rehabilitation gym. The unit cares for both adult and pediatric burn patients as well as an adult trauma population requiring intermediate monitoring care. The unit has both inpatient and outpatient (Burn Clinic) facilities. Our staff also provide burn outreach and education and annually host a Burn Camp for burn patient survivors. The American College of Surgeons designated our unit as a Level I Burn Center since 1996.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform patient personal hygiene such as bathing, toileting, feeding, dressing, grooming and oral care for patients
  • Turn, position and ambulate patients
  • Assist patients with bedpans, urinals and perineal cleansing
  • Take temperature, pulse and blood pressure
  • Enter daily patient record charting in computer
  • Perform simple diagnostic/therapeutic procedures (i.e., dressing changes)
  • Clean equipment, patient bedside area and nursing unit
  • Set up rooms for patient admission
  • Transport patients by bed, cart or wheelchair
  • Transport equipment, specimens and supplies
  • Stock and supply patient rooms and Nursing unit
  • Perform basic CPR as required
  • Maintain patient confidentiality
Percent of Time: 50% - 20 hours per week
Schedule:
Rotating schedule. Flexible hours in 4, 8, or 12 hour blocks
Location: Roy Carver Pavilion (RCP)
Rotations: Every other weekend, every other holiday rotation

Minimum Eligibilty Requirements:
  • Ability to read, write and follow instructions.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Has experience working in a health care environment with direct patient care.
  • Is a Certified Nursing Assistant
  • Ability to communicate effectively with hospital staff and respond quickly to patient behavior changes
  • Strong written communication skills
  • Customer service experince
