Open Rank Faculty in Mathematics at Lecturer or Tenure-Track Level

The Department of Mathematics at Southern Utah University invites applications for a non-tenure-track (NTT) or tenure-track (TT) teaching position at the level of Lecturer (NTT), Assistant Professor (NTT or TT), or Associate Professor (NTT or TT) starting in August 2024. The primary responsibility will be to teach undergraduate mathematics courses, with a concentration on General Education courses. The successful candidate will show evidence of the ability to listen to student questions, explain concepts in a way they can understand, and provide student outreach and support. Department service and continuing development in teaching are also expected as the faculty member progresses. For rank advancement, scholarly activity for NTT faculty can take the form of disseminating teaching findings and professional development. For TT faculty, scholarly activity should include publications and presentations, usually in the faculty member's field of specialty. Engaging undergraduate students in research is encouraged. Service on committees in the department and college is expected for all faculty, and higher-ranked faculty are expected to serve on university committees. The teaching load is 30 credit hours per academic year for NTT faculty and 24 credit hours per academic year for TT faculty. This includes a mixture of 3- and 4-credit courses. These appointments are renewable and are anticipated as long-term faculty positions.

Review of applications will begin immediately. The position will remain open until filled.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. NTT faculty teach 30 credit hours per academic year, mostly general education and preparatory courses; TT faculty teach 24 credit hours per academic year at all levels according to specialty.
  2. Continued scholarly activity and professional development according to rank, as described above.
  3. Service to the department, college, and university.
  4. Curriculum assessment and development.

Education and Experience Requirements:
  1. A Masters degree in Mathematics or Mathematics Education, or a Master's degree in a related field and 18 graduate Mathematics hours is required for NTT; a Ph.D. in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Statistics, or Data Science is required for TT.
  2. Evidence of commitment to and excellence in teaching and developing math courses. Experience teaching online courses and supporting online students will be viewed favorably.
  3. Scholarly activity concomitant with degree as explained above.
  4. Willingness to serve on committees.
  5. Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to interact positively with faculty, staff, and students.

Documents needed to apply:
  • Cover letter.
  • Resume/Curriculum vitae.
