Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 327-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus as well as at 10 Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis.

Job Role Summary

The Ophthalmic Technician performs imaging of the eye for diagnostic treatment, educational and research purposes in support of the Department of Ophthalmology. This position is responsible for the entire patient "work up" function for residents and staff physicians, including obtaining accurate patient histories based on chief complaints and/or diagnoses.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Proactively contributes to Eskenazi Health's mission: Advocate, Care, Teach and Serve with special emphasis on the vulnerable population of Marion County. Models Eskenazi Health values of Professionalism, Respect, Innovation, Development and Excellence
  • Performs all imaging eye modalities including Humphrey Visual Fields, Goldman Visual Fields, Confrontational Visual Fields, Pachemetry, Fundus Photography/Florescence Angiogram, OCT, Pentacam Topography, IOL Master/Immersion - A Scan, Manual and auto lensometry
  • Performs manual refraction and auto refraction
  • Performs basic biomicroscopy
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the following tests and when they should be used: Stereo, Amsler Grid, Neuro Color plates, CFVF, Afferent Pupil Defect, Motility Assessment, Cover Test with the basic strabismus diagnosis
  • Dilates patients' eyes and administers topical ophthalmic and oral medications per physicians orders
  • Performs tonometry.
  • Performs surgical scheduling if required
  • Performs stocking and cleaning of exam rooms and maintains clinics equipment
  • Participates in surgical or research studies

Job Requirements

  • High school education equivalent (GED)
  • Minimum of 1 year previous experience working in a hospital or patient care environment with public interaction preferred
  • Certification for Ophthalmic Assistant by the American Academy of Ophthalmology preferred but must be attained during first year of employment

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge and skills necessary to assess and provide care appropriate to age and developmental level of patients served
  • Knowledge of procedures and standards related to patient care activities
  • Knowledge of infection control principles and safety measures
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to use age appropriate communication skills
  • Knowledge of basic computer operating systems and set-up including scheduling
  • Phlebotomy/blood drawing experience preferred
  • Knowledge or ability to learn basic anatomy, pharmacology and terminology of the eye
  • Knowledge to triage patient emergencies by phone and or in person
  • Basic understanding of Ophthalmology surgical instruments and sterilization techniques
  • Ability to assess and reschedule missed appointments
  • Ability to recognize and adapt to the special needs of a patient and his/her culture
  • Knowledge of retinscopy preferred
