SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

The NYCLU seeks a full-time Organizer and Senior Organizer based in Buffalo. Candidates will be assigned to a position based on their qualifications and experience. The Organizer/Senior Organizer for Buffalo is a member of the NYCLU's statewide Field Organizing Department, which engages in multi-layered advocacy efforts aimed at both the state and local levels including grassroots organizing, public education, coalition building, leadership development, and lobbying of state and local lawmakers. The Organizer/Senior Organizer supports the Field Organizing Department in a wide range of both local and statewide work to further the NYCLU's mission, build visibility and strategic priorities and as part of the NYCLU's interdisciplinary approach to policy advocacy and culture change.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop, organize, and lead public advocacy campaigns that mobilize the NYCLU's base to uphold and defend civil liberties and civil rights
  • Organize large-scale public education and organizing events, such as rallies, community forums, lobby visits, public hearings, news conferences, panel discussions, and trainings
  • Conduct extensive public education, including public speaking at community events and representing the NYCLU in the media
  • Contribute to the development of public education materials and workshops, including contributing to and/or editing blogs, public letters, reports, etc.
  • Build relationships with grassroots groups, communities, advocacy organizations, schools, and government agencies, including representing the NYCLU at community events, coalition meetings, panels, and rallies
  • Identify emerging issues and recommend response plans
  • Coordinate and collaborate across NYCLU departments and regions
  • Build a base of volunteers in and around Buffalo
  • Stay abreast of NYCLU's statewide organizing portfolio, including supporting the work of organizers statewide, where requested
  • Actively support the NYCLU's internal and external commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ability to regularly travel within Erie County and to Albany and New York City headquarters, as needed
  • Must be a Buffalo resident
  • Demonstrated commitment to civil rights and liberties
  • Campaign and organizing experience
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, proven ability to effectively interact with diverse populations and a proven track record of relationship building
  • Ability to think critically and contextually about systemic issues of race, power and identity
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Familiarity with Western New York State history, government structures and communities
  • Willingness to work flexible hours including many evenings and weekends
  • Proficiency with MS Office programs, digital organizing tools and social media platforms
  • Valid U.S. driver's license preferred
SUPERVISION AND DIRECT REPORTS

The Organizer/Senior Organizer reports to Assistant Director of the Western Region and/or designee. The Senior Organizer tasks may include leading regional Organizers and administrative staff, as designated. The Senior Organizer is also expected to meet regularly with NYCLU organizers outside their designated region.
