Loyola Medicine, treating the whole person with compassion-to \"also treat the human spirit.\" The Cardiac Support/Perfusion Department seeks a Perfusionist to facilitate the expansion of the Cardiovascular Surgery Program, and incorporate into the perfusion team to cover CV cases at Loyola, Gottlieb and MacNeal hospitals.

20 hours per week

The Perfusionist will be responsible for operating extracorporeal circulation equipment during any medical situation where it is necessary to support or temporarily replace the patient's circulatory or respiratory function. Will be knowledgeable with a variety of equipment, including ventricular assist devices, to perform extracorporeal circulation functions and is responsible in consultation with the physician to select the appropriate equipment and techniques to be used. Will Assists in the conservation of blood and blood products.

Position Summary

  • PATIENT CARE - Conduct partial and total heart-lung bypass for all indications. Conduct long term respiratory, circulatory, or cardiac assist support. Conduct intra-aortic balloon pumping and other methods of counter pulsation. Perform intra-operative auto transfusion on cardiac and non-cardiac procedures. Participate in blood conservation techniques. Perform Platelet Gel processing. Perform isolated organ or limb perfusion. Analyze, operate and perform activated clotting time measurements.
  • Administer Cardioplegia to provide myocardial protection during open-heart surgery per surgeon's instructions. Operate the heater/cooler machine during cardiopulmonary bypass. Manage anticoagulation and hematologic monitoring/analysis. Perform physiologic monitoring/analysis.
  • Select proper perfusion cannulation for specific procedure and according to surgeon's request. Manage patient hypothermic/hyperthermic situations accordingly. Manage hemodilution appropriately. Provide hemofiltration management when warranted. Administer pharmacologic agents, blood products and anesthetic agents via the extracorporeal circuit according to the standing orders and verbal orders prescribed by the operating surgeon and/or staff anesthesiologist. Perform accurate documentation of cardiopulmonary bypass procedure on extracorporeal record. Conduct perfusion for all cardiac surgery patients and other patients requiring circulatory support. Comply with Point of Care laboratory protocols and quality control practices regarding Activated Clotting Time analysis. Participate in auto-transfusion devices quality control protocols and practices based on established hospital and aaBB standards. Respond to emergency calls for surgery and in order to troubleshoot equipment problems. Prepare and assemble the heart-lung and auto -transfusion machines for cardiac surgery, including priming, adding medications and/or blood products per protocol. Conduct extracorporeal circulation and monitor necessary variables to ensure safe management of physiologic functions, which includes techniques as hypothermia and hemodilution. Provide support for partial and total heart-lung bypass for all indications; long-term respiratory or cardiac assists; intra-aortic balloon pumping and other methods of counter pulsation. Administer cardioplegia to protect the heart during open-heart surgery and pharmacologic agents according to orders prescribed operating surgeon and/or staff anesthesiologist. Conduct research in extracorporeal circulation in conjunction with surgeons. Perform intra-operative auto transfusion on cardiac and non-cardiac procedures; isolated organ or limb perfusion; hemofiltration, and activated clotting time analysis as indicated. Review patient charts prior to each procedure they are assigned and make any necessary recommendations regarding care of the patient.
  • DOCUMENTATION - Accurately document information on patient record during procedure and generate appropriate charges.
  • MAINTENANCE OF EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES - Participates in inventory control, billing of supplies and equipment as needed. Supervises care and repair of equipment to ensure optional working condition. Maintain cleanliness of equipment and sterility of supplies.
  • QUALITY - Participate in the design and implementation of ongoing quality assurance processes.

Position Requirements

Minimum Required:
  • Bachelor's Degree OR equivalent training acquired via work experience or education
  • Specify Degree(s): Graduate of accredited perfusion program
  • Less than one year of previous job-related experience
  • On call required (shared equally among staff)
  • Valid Illinois State Driver's License

Preferred:
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 3-5 years of previous job-related experience
  • Valid Illinois State Driver's License
  • Other: Satisfactory completion of annual hospital based mandatory Safety and Compliance test,

Licensure/Certifications:

Required:
  • CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) from American Heart Association (AHA) ONLY
  • Perfusion Certification (CCP) from the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP)
  • Perfusionist License from the State of Illinois

Required Skills:
  • Ability to communicate verbally
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and established procedures
  • Other: Participating in perfusion call schedules incorporating flexible work hours.
  • Wear personal protective equipment for lengthy periods at a time
  • Ability to effectively deal with staff and equipment during life threatening situations. Attend meetings, participation in research when needed, contributing to publications and attending continuation education courses in order to maintain re-certification.
