Job Summary:

Under the clinical supervision of the Chiefof the service line, oversees and participates in the care of patients in the inpatient,practice. and operating room setting. The Physician Assistant performs evaluations, coordinates andparticipates in treatment plans, monitors patient progress and documentspatient care.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs initial evaluation of Surgery patients:
    • obtains and documents appropriate and comprehensive healthhistories.
    • performs and documents appropriate and comprehensivephysical examinations.

  • Presents and discusses the findings of the initialevaluation with the Surgeon to determine the treatment plan.
  • Documents the treatment plan and writes appropriate orders.
  • Coordinates elements of the treatment plan and assesses,evaluates and documents patient progress.
  • Reviews patient care management issues with the MedicalDirector. Consults with appropriate resources as needed.
  • Documents treatment plan revisions and writes appropriateorders.
  • Reviews results of laboratory and other diagnostic tests andformulates an interpretation.
  • Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including butnot limited:
  • wound care/debridement.
  • tube/drain insertion, care or removal.
  • suturing/suture removal.
  • insertion or removal of traction pins.
  • splint, brace or cast application or removal.
  • medication administration including IV push drugs and the
  • injection of steroid and anesthetic agents.
  • insertion or removal of central venous lines.
  • insertion of nasogastric tubes.
  • bladder catheterization.
  • phlebotomy and IV insertion.
  • electrocardiograms.
  • Writes patient orders in accordance with Medical Staffpolicies.
  • Provides first-level response to acute patient complicationsand emergencies and initiates appropriate measures.
  • Participates in the discharge planning process at the pointof admission and throughout the patient's hospitalization:
    • participates in discharge conferences asappropriate/necessary.
    • completes patient care referrals as necessary.
    • dictates discharge summaries as requested.

  • Educates, instructs and counsels patients and families. Provides psychological, emotional andinformational support to patients and families. Communicates patient needs toappropriate team members.
  • Accepts responsibility and accountability for his/her actionsin delivering patient care.
  • Collaborates and communicates effectively and establishesgood rapport with all levels of personnel.
  • Orients medical students, physician assistants and residentsto the environment, patient care practices and hospital policies andprocedures.
  • Attends Surgical Grand Rounds each week.
  • Participates in the quality improvement/quality assuranceprocess.
  • Assures that medication orders rendered are reviewedquarterly; assures that all Schedule II medication orders are reviewed by responsiblephysician within 96 hours.
  • Assures compliance with all mandated review functions.
  • Performs such other duties as requested from time to time bythe Chair of Surgery as he or she may deem reasonable and necessary for theefficient maintenance of quality of care at the Hospital.
  • Carries pager and participates in post-surgical phone calls.



Qualifications
Qualifications:

Education
    • Evidence of continued education andprofessional development.

      Experience
    • Experience in the Surgical ServiceLines preferred

Licenses, Certifications, and/orRegistrations
    • Certificate of registration from the Commonwealth ofMassachusetts Board of Registration of Physician Assistants.
    • CPR (BLS) certification required.

Knowledge and Skills
  • Demonstrated analytical abilities and strong interpretativeskills for integrating information from the patient history, physical exam, anddiagnostic data to be able to formulate a differential diagnosis and subsequenttreatment plan for orthopedic patients in both elective and emergentsituations.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal, communication andproblem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of the special needs andbehaviors of infant, child, adolescent, adult, older adult patients preferred.

Physical Environment:

The Physician Assistant works in avariety of patient care environments where there may be exposure to communicablediseases and hazardous materials such as chemotherapeutic agents, radioisotopesand radiation. Caring for patients alsoinvolves exposure to human waste and other unpleasant elements. Other dutiesmay include exposure to dirt, odors, cramped quarters, etc.
