Headquartered in Lincoln, Nebraska, the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) operates nine institutions housing approximately 5,300 inmates state-wide.
The current physician opportunity is with the Reception and Treatment Center and the Nebraska State Penitentiary in Lincoln. This is a discretionary position and is not subject to the State of Nebraska Classified System Personnel Rules and Regulations. NDCS is accredited by the American Correctional Association. Examples of Work
Supervises and/or participates in the examination and diagnosis of acutely ill patients and assumes responsibility for treatment. Recommends admission and release of acutely ill patients. Performs major or minor surgery as required.
Reads and interprets x-ray films. Assists the instruction of professional and sub-professional staff in the general field of medical care. Performs routine medical services involving the examination, care and treatment of patients or staff. May perform advanced medical work in one or more of the recognized medical specialties.
May participate in the examination and treatment of mentally ill patients. Works closely with consultant staff in strengthening medical service available to the facility and assist in the instruction of professional and sub-professional staff in general and specialized fields of medical care. Supervises physician of lower rank, graduate nurses and attendants in the performance of medical, nursing and custodial services.
Qualifications / Requirements
REQUIREMENTS:
General Practice:
M.D. degree and license to practice medicine in the state of Nebraska plus three years experience as a visiting physician at an approved hospital or two years of experience as a staff physician at an approved hospital.
Specialty Field:
M.D. degree and license to practice medicine in the state of Nebraska plus three years of residency training in a recognized medical specialty in an approved hospital plus eligibility for, or possession of, certification in one of the medical specialty field.
OTHER: Applicants accepting a job offer must pass the following pre-employment exams in this order: medical exam, and at a randomly announced time, pass a drug test. Once at the Staff Training Academy, must successfully complete the fully paid NE Corrections Training Program.
