The Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Virginia seeks an EM Boarded PHYSICIAN SCIENTIST for a tenure-eligible position to serve as an Assistant/Associate or Professor of Emergency Medicine.

This individual will have the opportunity to be a research focused Emergency Medicine Physician in collaboration with other research and clinical focused physicians and departmental leadership, staff, and clinical faculty. The ideal candidate should have a track record demonstrating achievements or strong potential for achievements in an innovative research program that can attract sustained extramural funding from industry or government agencies. The chosen candidate will be appointed at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level and receive protected time to enable establishment of their research focus and network within UVA Health. Adjunct appointments appropriate to the candidate's research focus may be available to allow participation in cross-grounds research, collaborative training, and professional growth and development opportunities. The appointee will have access to a broad array of shared resources internal to the Department of Emergency Medicine, including clinical research coordinators and administrative support, as well as the other supported and affiliated divisions, departments, and agencies across the school and the community to enable their research.

The Department of Emergency Medicine is led by Robert O'Connor, MD, MPH, and includes adult and pediatric care, with active air and ground transport programs. Furthermore, the department has an established Emergency Medicine Research office with physician researchers, clinical research coordinators, and a grants and contract finance specialist. The department is administratively supported with a dedicated administrative director and a full complement of support administrators and administrative support personnel. Additionally, there is an established ACGME emergency medicine residency program with 12 residents per year, well-established ACGME fellowships in Medical Toxicology and EMS, and additional fellowships in Advanced Ultrasonography, Cardiovascular Emergencies, Research, Administration, and Medical Education

The UVA Health System is a 700-bed tertiary care and Level 1 trauma center with an annual ED census of 70,000 located at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Charlottesville, Virginia. UVA Health System includes defined Intensive Care Units for neonatal, pediatric, and adult patient populations. The University of Virginia, School of Medicine and affiliated UVA Health form the premier medical research institution in the Commonwealth of Virginia and have a rich tradition of discovery, translational, clinical and outcomes-based health services research grounded in a culture of collaboration and service.

With UVA Health, faculty have opportunities that expand their primary focus and allows for personal and professional growth and development across the full array of physician, educator, researcher, and leadership opportunities including:

  • Clinical Activities - Faculty serve as attending physicians within the UVA emergency department. Completion of residency training in emergency medicine and board-eligibility/certification will be required. Preference given to those applicants who have completed additional fellowship training and board certifications.
  • Teaching - Teaching encompasses all activities that directly facilitate student learning, including the contact hours spent in the classroom, office hours, class preparation, grading, answering student email, student advising, evaluating and making available course materials, facilitating e-learning and related duties.
  • Research - The research component normally includes scholarly publication, attending academic conferences and obtaining grants. More senior scholars often take leadership roles in scholarly associations and act as editors, board members and referees for grant-giving organizations, academic presses and scholarly journals.
  • Service - University service involves membership in departmental, college-level and university committees, attending departmental meetings, student recruitment and processing routine paperwork such as filling out reports, answering email, participating in surveys and voting in university elections.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Qualified candidates must have an MD or DO and residency trained in Emergency Medicine, be board-certified or board-eligible in Emergency Medicine. Fellowship or advanced training in research or other areas or focuses that extend into the research area is highly preferred.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record or a significant potential for track record in an innovative research program as evident by their presentations, publications, and funding track record through sustained extramural funding from industry or government agencies are highly encouraged to apply.
