Job Description

Flexion is looking for a Product Manager with start-up experience who thrives on building and delivering products incrementally to join our Flexion team in supporting agile government initiatives in the Maryland/Virginia/Washington DC area. This work will be done remotely. We are seeking someone who is both creative and practical in assessing problems and uncovering long term solutions.

Why you want to work at Flexion:

At Flexion (an agile software company that's been delivering excellence for over 24 years), our company culture is built on autonomy, trust, and transparency. We empower teams to remain autonomous and self-directed by hiring people who can solve complex problems by functioning collaboratively-this means lending a hand and flexing your multi-skilled muscles (research, content, business analysis, information architecture, etc.) as needed. Every member within a cross-functional team is a leader who takes responsibility for the entire team's success, which mirrors the company's overall flat structure.

What the job looks like:

In this role, you'll use a start-up mentality to play a critical role in a cross-functional scrum team working on a variety of projects at any given time. You'll operate at the intersection of our design, project management, and technology teams, as well as understanding and managing the interests of our government stakeholders.

You'll be responsible for the strategy, roadmap, and feature definition for the product that supports the government mission. This entails working with stakeholders and users to understand goals, pain points, and opportunities, and taking these insights and data to understand what features or improvements we should prioritize to develop and deliver a minimally viable product.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to elicit, analyze, and understand needs, constraints, and risks, while aligning with organizational strategy and priorities
  • Develop and communicate the product vision with a focus on measurable outcomes
  • Establish close communication and trust with stakeholders by seeking input, building consensus, and remaining transparent in the team's work
  • Own and prioritize the product backlog, ensure user stories are ready for development, and approve product deliverables
  • Lead the team with empathy, candid communication, and clear direction
  • Track and regularly share progress with stakeholders and team
  • Collaborate with the team and stakeholders to deliver business value with each sprint
  • Facilitate cross-team communication, identify dependencies, and mitigate risks
  • Help internal team test and prepare product for shipping
  • Build, socialize, and execute on your roadmap, consistently evaluating opportunities for improvement and growth for future phases that iterate on a product

Why we want to hire you:

You are a master of building products using a startup mentality. You prefer to incrementally drive learning and development, from strategy to implementation details, through authentic use and rapid iteration.

You can break down features into narrow slices of value, while still thinking about how they fit into the whole. You welcome change as a positive thing (instead of viewing it as "rework") and never look at anything you deliver as "final." You understand when "good enough" really IS good enough, without ever compromising on the overall product quality. You've built different kinds of products, for different clients (including start-ups), with different technologies, and that variety suits you.

You have:
  • At least 8 years of product management or relevant experience
  • A bachelor's degree (or equivalent work experience)
  • Deep analytical skills, with experience using data to inform decisions
  • Experience in a start-up or start-up-like business setting
  • A strategic mind, with the ability to contemplate a opportunities as you plan your roadmap
  • Experience building and managing requirements from large groups of partners/stakeholders with the ability to make thoughtful trade-offs among diverse set of needs and priorities
  • Proven ability to build consensus, drive decisions, and inspire action within your team as well as with stakeholders
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Highly organized, with the ability to perform basic project management tasks
  • Team player and always willing to knowledge-share and contribute to the growth of the team

At Flexion, we live by these principles:
  • Speak openly and honestly with your colleagues and clients about problems and proposed solutions
  • Welcome and handle changing requirements and priorities with little or no warning
  • Collaborate online in small groups about 50% of the time
  • Encourage simple and minimal solutions that keep options open
  • Expect and vocally advocate for quality first
  • Learn new practices and techniques as the situation demands
  • Ensure the teams develop demonstrable software every week or two
  • Do what needs to be done to deliver the product or project without ego or attitude
  • Dig deep to find the root causes of problems so we can create the right solutions
  • Relentlessly improve yourself, your team, and your processes
