Job Title:Psychiatric Care Technician (HS)Department:University Hospital | Emergency DepartmentJob DescriptionSCOPE OF POSITIONThe OSU Medical Center is committed to enhancing the quality of care our patients receive. The Psychiatric Care Technician (PCT) functions as an integral member of the Interdisciplinary Treatment Team of care providers on a patient care unit, who reflect a culture of cooperation, enthusiasm, and mutual respect. The team, consisting of the Staff Nurse (RN), Psychiatric Care Technician (PCT), Patient Care Associate (PCA), the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), the Unit Clerical Associate (UCA, and other interdisciplinary staff provide patient care and supportive services that are directed at achievement of patient care outcomes, maximizing the patient's involvement in his/her own care plan, improving service levels, reducing the length of hospitalization, and decreasing costs. Patients and their family will experience the benefits of patient-focused care through the integrated skills of all team members. Services provided include 24-hour emergency care, 23-hour observation, and partial hospitalization care for psychiatric patients.POSITION SUMMARYThe PCT is responsible for providing a variety of direct and indirect patient care activities, as supervised and directed by the RN. Care is provided in collaboration with the patient, family, and other members of the patient-focused team. Overall responsibilities are to assist the team in meeting patient care needs.The PCT is required to demonstrate a willingness to work as a team member while providing quality care for patients and their families/significant others in accordance with the OSU Medical Center Customer Service Philosophy. The PCT must demonstrate the ability to focus team efforts on the most productive activities to provide quality nursing for psychiatric patients and their families/significant others. Under the direction and supervision of the RN, the PCT assists with maintaining unit operations in compliance with hospital and regulatory agency standards, and in accordance with the established OSU Medical Center Customer Service Philosophy.The PCT is responsible for:Maintaining a therapeutic milieuReinforcing patient educationMaintaining safetyEmergency preparednessInfection controlInformation managementReporting patients complaints of pain to the patient's assigned nurseImplementing age-specific interventionsReporting patient behaviors indicative of fall riskTechnical skills include recording and transmitting EKGs, specimen collection, phlebotomy skills, Accucheck, applying therapeutic holds and restraint in physical crisis situations, operating specialty beds, assistive equipment, and mechanical lifts and scales.
