The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Nursing is seeking a Nursing Assistant to perform specific tasks to assist members of the Nursing team in providing patient care under the direct supervision of Registered Nurses.

Among our hospital's 811 beds, just under 200 are designated as intensive care beds. In a typical year, we perform more than 32,000 major operations and receive nearly 60,000 emergency department visits.

Psychiatric Nursing Assistant Is are unlicensed staff members who are accountable to and work under the direct supervision of a professional nurse. Under close supervision, performs specific nursing tasks to assist and provide for the general comfort and welfare and monitoring of psychiatric hospital patients.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
  • Interacts with patients, visitors and other health care professionals in an effective manner and maintains positive, cooperative professional relationships.
  • Communicates with patients in a respectful, therapeutic, recovery-oriented manner.
  • Establishes therapeutic relationship while caring for patient and terminates the relationship when the patient is discharged.
  • Recognizes potential hazards for staff, patients, visitors or self and initiates appropriate action to correct the problem.
  • Performs treatments and tasks as assigned and delegated. Demonstrates appropriate responsiveness to instruction, feedback and coaching.
  • Assists with patient admissions, transfers, and discharges.
  • Implements the plan of care under the direction of the registered nurse.
  • Assists with provisions of patient care with regard to the patient's condition and age.
  • Assists with turning, positioning, ambulating, and transporting patients.
  • Uses proper body mechanics and ergonomic equipment, as indicated.
  • Follows standard precautions with infection control in accordance with institutional policy.
  • Uses effective violence prevention strategies and functions effectively as a violence management team member when violence cannot be prevented.
  • Assists others during emergencies, within the scope of the PNA role.
  • Assists patients with personal hygiene and activities of daily living.
  • Demonstrates a good understanding of medical records and documentation.
  • Uses medical terminology and symbols (verbal, written and electronic) to document patient care and progress within the PNA scope of practice.
  • Maintains a well-organized, clean patient care and employee work area.
  • Completes all duties in accordance with UIHC and BHS practice and personnel standards.
  • Demonstrates initiative in contributing to workload of unit.
  • Performs other projects and tasks as assigned.
  • Participates in unit staff meetings and in-services as appropriate.
  • Complies with annual competency review guidelines.
  • Incorporates the principles of Service Leadership to ensure positive patient/customer relations.
  • Adheres to UIHC policies regarding personal conduct, including: follows established leadership, remaining responsive to instruction and coaching from supervisors and meeting the standards of personal appearance, attendance and punctuality.

Percent of Time: 50%-100% - 20-40 hours per week
Schedule: Shifts vary, but are negotiable on some units
