The Carver College of Medicine Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology is seeking a Research Assistant to join the Tootle lab (www.tootlelab.com) to perform research using Drosophila melanogaster (fruit flies) to define how lipid signals regulate actin in the cytoplasm and the nucleus. Execute planned research activities using observation, measurement and analytical techniques. Manage and maintain Drosophila stocks, laboratory reagents, and laboratory safety and ethics training

Duties Include:

Laboratory management:

  • Maintain Drosophila stocks
  • Manage and train undergraduate research assistants for laboratory maintenance tasks
  • Order supplies and reconcile monthly financial reports
  • Manage and maintain detailed laboratory inventory
  • Assist in the maintenance of lab equipment, arranging service contracts and interfacing with technicians and vendors
  • Manage and maintain records of laboratory safety and scientific ethics training

Conducting experiments and analyzing data:
  • Perform immunofluorescent analysis, confocal imaging, and image analysis
  • Design and execute genetic analyses in Drosophila, including cell-specific expression and knockdown, dominant genetic interactions, and generation of compound genetic stocks.
  • Other experimental approaches regularly used, including: RNA and DNA extraction, PCR, qRT-PCR, molecular cloning, and western blotting.
  • Analyze and summarize data, present data at both lab meetings and external meetings, and contribute to manuscripts.

Much of the research conducted is interdisciplinary and collaborations are fostered and coordinated through major research centers, institutes and programs. Two faculty members are Howard Hughes Institute Investigators, 12 are members of the Institute of Medicine and two are members of the National Academy of Sciences.

Type of Position: Specified Term. Initial appointment is for one year. Appointment may be extended based on performance and availability of funding.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in biomedical-related science, cell biology, physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience in a relevant field of study
  • Must be able to translate, adapt and apply that knowledge to perform beginning level research in biomedical science discipline
  • Fine motor skills are required for animal tissue collection and stock maintenance
  • Outstanding organizational and time management skills are required
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required

Desired Qualifications:
  • 0.5 to 2 years previous biomedical research experience with:
    • Drosophila animal handling and genetics
    • Immunofluorescent staining and microscopy
    • Collecting tissue samples from small animals
    • DNA/RNA/protein purification
    • Western blotting
    • PCR and qRT-PCR
    • Cloning
