Job Summary:

The University of Colorado seeks a full-time Research Associate to work in the Department of Pediatrics/Section of Nutrition at the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora. The overall goal of the research is to investigate the effects of maternal exposures (e.g., diabetes, obesity) on the offspring, using a primary human stem cell model. This position will be supporting a variety of research protocols investigating metabolism, insulin resistance, and epigenetics in umbilical cord-derived human stem cells. The Section of Nutrition in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus is an interdisciplinary center encompassing basic, clinical and translational research as well as post-graduate training and the career development of research professionals in the field of nutrition, physical activity, community outreach, and health promotion.

Key Responsibilities:

    Perform some lab management responsibilities (prepare for inspections, ensure proper safety protocols are in place), 10%. Troubleshoot new assay design/protocol development 15%. Set-up and perform day-to-day laboratory experiments utilizing techniques that include, but are not limited to (50%): Cell culture. DNA/RNA extraction, quantification. qPCR, bisulfite conversion, pyrosequencing. Immunoassays and colorimetric assays. Molecular biology techniques to manipulate gene expression in cultured cells. Western Blotting. Use of radioactive materials for metabolic assessments (C-14, H-3). Stable isotope analysis of biospecimens. Maintain detailed and accurate records of experimental findings (15%). Analyze experimental results. Prepare figures and tables for publication, grant applications, and progress reports. Biospecimen handling and organization of many samples from a large cohort. Other duties, as assigned (10%). Conduct literature reviews in PubMed. General laboratory duties as assigned. Data entry and database maintenance. Some weekend hours, as needed.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
    Doctoral degree in biology, nutrition, biochemistry or a related field. Minimum 3-5 years' full-time experience in a research laboratory setting.

Preferred Qualifications:
    Familiarity with Good Clinical Practice and Good Laboratory Practice guidelines.
  • Experience with primary cell cultures.
  • Experience performing immunoassays.
  • Experience in protocol development and optimization.
  • Experience with ethical review process and submissions. Experience performing nucleic acid isolations, purification, quantification. Experience performing PCR, qPCR, and Western Blotting.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively while concurrently working on multiple projects.

  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.

  • Ability to effectively teach and interact with students.
  • Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Proficiency with graphing, statistical analysis, and reference software packages.
  • Evidence of scholarly activity such as authorship on scientific presentations or publications.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Excel.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE: $56,000 - $112,000

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
