Position Summary

The Research Pharmacy Technician functions as a member of the Investigational Drug Service team to support the conduct of clinical research studies conducted within SMHS, GWU Hospital and Medical Faculty Associates.

The Research Pharmacy Technician will be responsible for the preparation and accountability of investigational drugs in accordance with industry and departmental standards.

Research Pharmacy Technician

  • Uphold integrity, ethics, and confidentiality according to organizational and industry standards for the conduct of clinical research.
  • Exhibit an understanding of each protocol Pharmacy Manual or Dose Prep Sheet by accurately preparing the investigational drug for dispensation.
  • Calculate required volumes and compound investigational parenteral products using aseptic techniques under a sterile environment.
  • Complete the study-related documentation for each dispensation according to established guidelines and industry standards.
  • Demonstrate professional competencies in communicating with the Research Pharmacist, study coordinators, principal investigators, and sponsor representatives on protocol related issues.
  • Demonstrate professional competencies in interacting and communicating with other health care professionals and patients.
  • Order, receive, and arrange the storage of study drug to meet protocol needs and physical storage requirements.
  • Maintain drug accountability in Vestigo® by conducting the IDS monthly inventory, resolving inventory discrepancies, and quarantining necessary investigational products.
  • Perform the tasks of label preparation, Vestigo® database entry, and the compiling of billing invoices for services provided.
  • Operate supportive technologies that are utilized in the IDS for drug preparation.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and comply with regulations, policies and procedures established by local and federal regulatory authorities and the Investigational Drug Service.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to quality care in the clinical research setting.
  • Ensure that proper security is maintained in the IDS by complying with drug storage requirements and entry requirements.
  • Demonstrate effectiveness in educating and orienting self to the George Washington University Hospital Pharmacy Department and providing in-services for GWUH Pharmacy, medical, and nursing staff as needed for new in-patient protocols.
  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

High school graduation required, two years college training is desirable, completion of an accredited Pharmacy Technician Training Program, with verification of certification. CPhT Certification required.

Experience

Two years of verified experience as a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) in a medical center or hospital pharmacy. Experience compounding IV medications is required. Chemotherapy compounding experience desired.
