Research Specialist II
Our laboratory focuses on understanding the underlying mechanisms for drug resistance and disease progression in the plasma cell neoplasm multiple myeloma. In our laboratory you will have the experience of translating important research into clinical applications for cancer patients. Our division is a collaborative, diverse laboratory environment that will yield meaningful teaching and learning experiences. We are seeking a Research Specialist II. This position requires a highly motivated individual with strong experience in cellular biology (particularly flow cytometry), tissue culture, and animal work.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Involved in experimental design and has primary responsibility for planning, implementation, evaluation and interpretation of results.
  • The design and interpretation process often will be in collaboration with the PI but may also be completed independently.
  • Modifies experimental design as needed when problems arise when appropriate
  • Performs a range of assays and troubleshooting as necessary. Trains others to perform assays.
  • Expert on the use and maintenance of lab equipment; trains others in the proper use and maintenance.
  • Compiles, analyzes, and interprets research data using various computer software applications.
  • Conducts library research and participates in editing and preparing manuscripts, scientific illustrations and computer graphics for publication.
  • Oversees and assures laboratory compliance with regulatory requirements and JHU standards, policies and procedures.
  • Oversee and train more junior technicians


Equipment, Machine, or Tool Requirements:
  • General computer skills, with experience with Microsoft Office


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
  • BS/BA, or equivalent, in Biology, Chemistry or Physics.
  • Survey knowledge of biology, biochemistry, chemistry, physics, microbiology or genetics. Preferred: Masters in Biotechnology a plus.
  • Requires a minimum of 2 years of medical research experience
  • Additional education may substitute for experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.*


* JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Special Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities:
  • Technologies employed in our projects include:
  • Multicolor flow cytometry
  • Basic molecular biology (PCR and quantitative PCR, DNA transfection with lipid reagents and electroporation, lentiviral transduction)
  • Cell biological assays of proliferation/apoptosis/differentiation/protein localization
  • Animal maintenance/care/tumor injections/measurements.
  • Under the supervision of the faculty investigator, the candidate should be able to design controlled experiments independently.
  • Candidate must be organized and familiar with aseptic technique.
  • Analytical skills: The candidate should be familiar with theory behind experiments and apply analytical skills to interpret experiments, including positive and negative controls.

    Starting Salary Range: $39,310 - $54,060 annually (commensurate with experience)

    The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
