Job Summary

The Poultry Biologics group is seeking an experienced, innovative and highly motivated professional to significantly contribute in the discovery and development of Poultry vaccines. Global Biologics designs and develops novel biological products to address economically impactful diseases or conditions in livestock and companion animals. As an integral member of research and development project teams, the candidate will design and implement R&D programs to advance vaccine development within Poultry Biologicals. The candidate will collaborate extensively with analytical, formulation, clinical, and regulatory scientists as part of our global multidisciplinary teams. Frequent technical interactions with global Veterinary Medicine R&D, Commercial and Manufacturing colleagues is anticipated. In addition, the position will clinically support a broad array of Poultry biological projects. The Scientist - Senior Scientist will work with autonomy and on multi-disciplinary project teams. To be successful, the candidate will be an effective communicator, motivated and will have knowledge in bacteriology, virology and vaccinology. The position is based in Kalamazoo (Michigan, USA) with frequent interactions with colleagues and external partners located around the globe.

Position Responsibilities

  • Apply knowledge of biological, analytical, microbiological, and molecular biology science in the design and execution of experiments to advance projects.
  • Systematically optimize analytical parameters to establish useful and robust assays for biological products.
  • Work in collaboration with colleagues in VMRD-Lab Sciences and Manufacturing to devise strategies for Master seeds, Analytical and Process development.
  • Serve as a technical resource to project teams by providing support in vaccinology, immunology, and microbiology required for successful project delivery. This includes open communication of experimental findings with team members, peers, and management.
  • Responsible for participation on research project teams with the goal to license animal health Biologics
  • Drive innovation and continuous improvement by conducting laboratory experiments to evaluate new technologies.
  • Document experiments in electronic laboratory notebooks and records in accord with scientific protocol and applicable Standard Operating Procedures. Provide summaries and reports for inclusion in dossiers for product registration and technology transfer.

Organizational Relationships
  • The position is located in the Global Biologics line. The Scientist - Senior Scientist will interact with peers and colleagues working in disciplines that include bioanalytical science, vaccine research, molecular biology, process development, clinical, formulation, clinical, and regulatory.
  • This position requires start-to-finish contributions across the life cycle of product development including Research, Development, Launch and post-Launch phases. The position works in partnership with colleagues in Lab Sciences, Regulatory, Project Management, Manufacturing, Clinical, Commercial Development and Life Cycle Innovation, and Marketing.
  • The Scientist - Senior Scientist is expected to form collaborative working relationships with Project Team Leaders and line representatives within multi-disciplinary team settings.
  • Interaction with Regulatory colleagues and National Regulatory Agencies for registration activities.
Education and Experience
  • Minimum: BS/MSc in biology, immunology, vaccinology, microbiology, or related fields with 2-5 years experience in the industry in vaccine development.
  • Knowledge of Poultry health arena and animal infectious diseases.
  • Desirable: Experience in the fields of analytical methods, clinical trials, cell culture, virus/bacteria propagation, molecular biology, recombinant expression systems and Poultry clinical experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, analyze and interpret clinical, bio-analytical, assay development, antigen identification and analysis, formulation analysis, immunology methods, and vaccine development experiments.

Technical Skills Requirements

Required:

Strong documentation skills. Computer skills required: Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (writing and verbal). Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues as a member of a multi-disciplinary team. Collaboration across teams.
  • Demonstration of initiative and self-motivation. Project Team or Project Sub-Team Leadership desirable.
  • Strong practical and theoretical knowledge of the scientific disciplines that support vaccine design and development.
  • Independent and critical scientific thinking. High attention to detail.
  • A willingness to embrace, evaluate, and enable new technologies for the purpose of improving existing capabilities
  • Prioritization of work and ability to meet multiple project timelines. Work efficiently with minimal supervision.
  • Management of lab supplies and operation of equipment autonomously.

Desirable:

Experience in bacterial and viral propagation (in vitro and in vivo), veterinary vaccine development, and associated analytical and immunology methods.
  • Experience in vaccine clinical trials (preferably poultry) including protocol and report development, in vivo techniques, assessment of clinical model outcomes, and interpretation of results.
  • Molecular expertise or knowledge in recombinant expression platforms
