Job Description

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Engineering responsibilities in the continuing development of low-cost coating processes for use in the fabrication of fuel cell and battery cell components
  • Participate/lead coating projects to assure supply of components to meet GM program timelines.
  • Process development of the solution/slurry making, solution/slurry delivery, and coating process to allow integration of advanced materials such as polymers and catalysts into fuel cell and battery cell designs
  • Participate/lead in the scale up of all aspects of a coating operation to meet GM volume requirements
    • Solution/slurry making, solution/slurry delivery components/systems, conveyance, web treatment, coating, and drying
    • Equipment design, procurement, installation, debug/startup, and documentation
    • Ongoing support and continuous improvement
  • Develop GM IP portfolio on all aspects of the coating process, including advanced coating concepts
  • Provide technical guidance and hands-on support to lab, pilot, and manufacturing operations personnel when required
  • Work with Product Engineering to ensure manufacturing and design requirements are compatible
  • Leverage external technical collaborations on coating development and scale up
  • Mentor other scientists and engineers

Additional Job Description

Qualifications:
  • Degree in chemical engineering, materials engineering or mechanical engineering (with strong materials background)
  • Minimum 5 years of industrial experience in chemical formulation development and scale up of formulation processes, including hands on experience working with wet chemicals and familiarity handling organic solvents
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in wet coating processes such as slot die, rod, gravure, and multilayer coating technologies as well as the corresponding solution/slurry making and mixing processes
  • Experience in the procurement of processing equipment
  • Knowledge of statistical methods as applied to experimental design and process development
  • Communication: Strong oral, written and presentation skills
  • Track record of working within cross functional teams to develop, test and implement new processing technologies
  • Hands-on, independent, self- motivated contributor that works well in small team/collaborative environment
Preferred
  • Hands-on experience with development or manufacturing the slurry mixing/making and coating processes for lithium ion batteries

  • Travel requirements - up to 25%
