Job Description

Primary Function of Position:

Contribute your mechanical engineering design and analysis skills to developing complex, precision equipment used to test, measure, and calibrate vision/optical products. These products include endoscopes, fiber optic light sources and near-eye displays. The developed equipment will be used in a manufacturing environment and needs to meet performance, safety, reliability, consistency and capacity requirements. Individuals in this role must demonstrate precision mechanical design experience and working within cross-functional teams to develop state of the art equipment.

Roles & Responsibilities:

This position has responsibility and authority to:

  • Evaluate and select suppliers for mechanical and electrical equipment components/subsystems.
  • Develop and continuously improve test and calibration equipment for image sensor, endoscope, laser, and LED optical systems.
  • Work closely with product development engineers and test software engineers to understand mechanical requirements, develop robust, reliable, and reproducible camera/sensor test and calibration equipment.
  • Work closely with process development engineers to understand mechanical requirements and develop accurate, robust, and reliable test equipment.
  • Development and improve test and calibration equipment used for "mid-volume" products including activities:
  • Design, specify, prototype, document, procure, assemble, qualify, implement, and improve test equipment mechanical components and equipment.
  • Documentation to include generating equipment specifications, validation protocols, assembly instructions, preventative maintenance, and calibration (PMC) in additional to CAD component and assembly drawings.
  • Analyze, debug and root cause measurement accuracy, reliability, repeatability, and reproducibility equipment issues.
  • Determine measurement system accuracy through application of metrology methods such as GUM uncertainty framework.

Qualifications

Skills, Experience, Education, & Training:

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering required, MS preferred.
  • Minimum 8 years mechanical, equipment design engineering experience for a medium to high volume product.
  • New product introduction/development experience desirable.
  • Great attitude, eager, willing/able to take initiative, works well with others in team environment.
  • Strong analytical skills to understand, analyze and improve the accuracy, repeatability, and reliability of measurement equipment.
  • Communication and documentation skills must be excellent. CAD experience (Solidworks).
  • Use of Agile or similar lifecycle management tool.
  • Experience with development of precision test equipment in optics/lasers preferred.
  • Experience with manufacturing test & calibration for cameras in consumer electronics a plus.
  • Able to travel periodically to international suppliers. (Approximately 4 times per year)
