Overview / Responsibilities

Wood is currently seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer & Department Manager to join our Life Sciences team within our Philadelphia office to develop life-changing and in many cases, life-saving solutions for our clients. We're looking for an energetic, self-motivated individual with the ability to execute all phases of project design. Project sizes will vary and will include both existing building improvements and new construction.

While this position will report into our Philadelphia location, due to our current remote capacity, we are also considering candidates outside of the Philadelphia area.

On a global scale, Wood serves the Life Sciences, Oil & Gas, Federal, Infrastructure, Manufacturing, Mining, and Power Industries. Our Philadelphia office has become the Center of Excellence for our global Life Sciences network, providing full-service pharmaceutical and biotechnology engineering, design, procurement, and project management services.

Responsibilities:

Engineering

  • Develop HVAC / Mechanical design documents for biotech and pharmaceutical facilities including: utility system sizing calculations, HVAC airflow and instrumentation diagrams, pressurization diagrams, zoning plans, utility system hydronic and instrumentation diagrams, and general arrangement plans
  • Lead mechanical design teams
  • Coordinate work with process engineers and architects to define utility requirements for utility generation and distribution systems
  • Calculate loads for wet utilities, line sizing, and distribution design (e.g. chilled water, plant steam, chilled glycol)
  • Preparing bid and purchase specifications for mechanical equipment (e.g. HVAC Systems, boilers, chillers)
  • Perform field surveys and evaluate condition of existing equipment and systems
  • Participating in project planning, cost development, and project scheduling
  • Review of submittals and shop drawings
  • Response to construction Requests For Information (RFIs), develop final construction documents including: plans, specifications, schedules, and details
  • Maintain effective communication with project team members and clients
  • Coaching and support of other mechanical engineers

Department Management
  • Direct supervision of a talented and growing mechanical department:
    • Forecast workload for department, provide staffing needs to Director of Engineering
    • Ensure each group member is fully billable
    • Assignment of team members to projects
    • Schedule regular meetings to foster communication and development
    • Perform mid and end of year reviews
    • Help to set employee performance goals for the year
  • Desire to grow the department
  • Assist in recruiting, interviewing, and selection of new candidates
  • Develop and implement training initiatives for the department
  • Support proposals by authoring technical sections


Skills / Qualifications

  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced team environment with multiple deadlines
  • BS/MS in Mechanical Engineering or Architectural Engineering
  • Minimum of 10 years' experience
  • Required computer skills: cooling/heating load calculation software, AutoCAD, and Revit 3D modeling
  • Flexibility to travel (~10%)
  • Knowledge of cGMPs preferred
  • Knowledge of building mechanical and lift safety codes preferred
  • International experience preferred
  • LEED-AP and/or CEM credential is desirable
  • Experience with sustainable design, alternative energy, energy audits, and USGBC Commissioning is a plus
