Primary Function of Position:

Design and construct pioneering manufacturing equipment used to produce minimally invasive medical devices.  This manufacturing equipment will range in complexity from custom manual fixtures to automated electromechanical systems, integrating functions such as electronic sensing, motion control, and machine vision.  This position will play a critical role in developing cutting edge manufacturing capabilities to enable the future of minimally invasive surgery.

The ideal candidate will have experience specifying and or developing custom automated equipment from design to sustained production use, will have demonstrated proficiency in mechanical design and the integration of electromechanical components, and will thrive working independently on complex projects.

Roles & Responsibilities:

• Design and build manufacturing equipment, which is deemed too proprietary to develop out of house. 
• Specify the requirements for, and manage the creation of, other manufacturing equipment which can be designed and fabricated by third parties.  Jointly develop custom tooling based on ISI’s product form factor. 
• Qualify manufacturing equipment to ensure the fulfillment of all requirements including IQ/OQ/PQ validation and verification activities.  Ability to create and execute quality documentation for internally and externally designed production equipment.
• Perform engineering studies to characterize equipment process windows. 
• Determine troubleshooting, maintenance, and calibration procedures for each piece of equipment and train relevant personnel to perform them.
• Thoroughly document all aspects of the equipment, including its requirements, design, operation, and qualification in compliance with Good Manufacturing Processes (GMP).
• Improve product quality and reliability using Six Sigma, Cpk, Gauge R&R, and similar quality tools.
• Provide equipment-related technical support to on-going production operations including maintenance of spare equipment, repairs, and documentation of support activities.
• Advocate techniques for World Class equipment & tooling design for manufacturing, assembly and product test.
• Support product cost reductions derived from equipment and tooling used in manufacturing.
• Travel to production plant in Mexico to ensure technology transfer to Mexicali personnel.  Occasionally travel domestically and internationally to suppliers. 

Skill/Job Requirements:

• Minimum BS Mechanical Engineering with 8 years minimum related experience; MSME with 6 years minimum related experience preferred. 
• Great attitude, eager, willing/able to take initiative, works well with others in team environment.
• Minimum 4 years’ experience designing and developing automated and semi-automated manufacturing equipment.
• 3D CAD proficiency, SolidWorks preferred.
• Track record developing high quality, reliable products.
• Strong analytical skills including FMEA, tolerance analysis, and statistical methods.
• Experience managing the development of complex integrated equipment.
• Proven ability to integrate electronic sensors, motors, and motion control components to perform mechatronic tasks.
• Familiarity with regulated Quality Systems, esp. medical device regulations, a plus.
• Working knowledge of robotics and control systems
• Working knowledge of vision system software and design, Cognex preferred
• Have familiarity of automation control systems including, robotics, pneumatics and PLC’s.
• Familiar or experience with EtherCAT
• Able to travel periodically (5-10%).
