Job Description

Position Overview

As a Senior Staff Engineer in the Grid Modeling and Compliance team, you will be accountable for performing grid and equipment modeling activities and ensuring compliance to various grid codes related to performance and modeling of Invenergy generation and transmission facilities and improve nationwide renewable energy reliability.

You will support selection of engineering firms to provide grid and equipment modeling services such as detailed studies to evaluate project's performance per design and grid code compliance and review of work performed by Equipment Manufacturers. The electrical system of these projects will include various renewable generation facilities including offshore, long-distant HVDC transmission links and associated converter stations.

Responsibilities

Grid Modeling and Compliance:

  • Perform grid studies related to power electronic and power systems control of renewable generation, battery energy storage systems, and High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) modeling and analyzing control performance utilizing industry standard analysis platforms such as PSS/e, PSLF, PowerWorld, TARA, ASPEN, CAPE, and PSCAD
  • Develop models in PSS/E, PSLF, ASPEN, TARA, PSCAD and other modeling tools.
  • Assist in developing and tuning power plant controllers in collaboration with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to achieve desired performance requirement established in grid codes.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of NERC standards related to grid modeling, IEEE 2800 - 2022, IEEE P2800.2, WECC and various independent system operators
  • Support the interconnection and grid analysis, renewable project engineering, generation and transmission operation groups with power systems engineering expertise; including equipment design, specification studies, performance studies, commissioning support, troubleshooting, and failure mode analyses.
  • Effectively communicate to both internal and external stakeholders by preparing detailed written reports or presentations describing analyses performed, solutions developed, and customer value propositions.

Construction and Operational Compliance Support
  • Review and assist evaluating competitive bids for power system studies needed prior to gird connections from external contractors performing design evaluation studies and model validation of generation and transmission projects
  • Perform and guide external consultant of pre-commissioning and commissioning tests related to grid code compliance and model validation per IEEE P2800.2
  • Attend on-site meetings and in person coordination meetings with Independent System Operator (ISO), interconnection utilities, Renewable Energy Generation and HVDC vendors and consulting engineers

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical, electrical Power Engineering, or similar
  • 2 + years of professional experience
  • Ability to travel occasionally, if needed (up to 25%).
  • Knowledge of power systems or renewable generation, ideally acquired through specific coursework, job experience, and internships.
  • Proficient with the use computers and Microsoft Office suite.
  • Eligible to work in the United States without the need for employer visa sponsorship now or in the future.

Preferred Experience and Skills:
  • Demonstrated modeling and technical experience in technical performance analysis of electric power systems with power electronic sources or loads. Experience in planning and execution of technical projects relevant to electric power systems and equipment design
  • Some experience with developing model in electromechanical domain like PSS/E, PSLF, and in Electromagnet Transient domain like PSCAD and Short Circuit domain like ASPEN etc (for Inverter Based Resource or other Power Electronics based models)
  • Master's or PhD degree in electrical or electric power engineering, or related field of study
  • Ability to work as a team member, to maintain project timelines, budgets, and deliver on commitments.
  • Ability to perform effectively in high-pressure situations while maintaining focus with commitment to quality and accuracy.
  • Strong organization and planning skills with the ability to manage tasks across multiple projects.
  • Strong communication (verbal/written) and interpersonal skills involving the ability to work cross-functionally to understand requirements and provide recommendations.
  • Experience with EHV/HV electrical infrastructure (substations/switchyards, distribution systems, transmission lines, transformers. etc.).
