Position Overview

We are currently seeking a Senior Electron Microscopist to join our team at Novelis Global Research and Technology Center (NGRTC) in Kennesaw, Georgia. The incumbent will be part of the Electron Optics lab team that uses advance electron microscopy techniques for microstructural investigations used in alloy development as well as defect analysis for plant and customer support.

The Microscopist will also have the role of lab responsible for the Electron Optics Laboratory, which includes, training, record keeping, test scheduling, LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) prioritization, maintenance, microscope verifications and ensuring compliance with our ISO 17025 quality program.
Responsibilities & Qualifications

Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates personal commitment to safety and good EHS awareness by following established safety rules and practices during all activities. Ensure all user and visitors are compliant with all Safety Absolutes and other EHS initiatives.
  • Carry out routine, as well as complex Electron Optics task requests from project leaders through our LIMS system
  • Train new and current users of the laboratory in all aspects of Electron Microscopy.
  • Prepare samples for TEM/STEM investigations using electropolishing, ion milling and FIB lift out tequniques
  • Working with the Lab Team Lead, scientists and engineers, aid in the capability development of the Electron Microscopy lab by staying current on the latest equipment and techniques.
  • Assume the role of lab responsible for the Electron Microscopy lab which includes maintaining ISO 17025 compliance, 5S organization, record keeping, training, sample test prioritization, scheduling, LIMS organization and annual microscope verifications.
  • Conduct Electron Microscopic investigations on samples of aluminum alloys as well as other metal systems for purposes of metallurgical assessment or defect analysis.
  • Maintains awareness of latest technologies relevant to electron microscopy and converts this into innovation that works.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the KPI's for a work area or project, and the link to the significance to the business.

Qualifications
  • Entry to this level typically requires 5-10 years of progressive experience in Electron Microscopy and a BS in metallurgy, metallurgical engineering, material science, physics or equivalent.
  • Hands on experience working in an Electron Microscopy Laboratory with an emphasis on material science. Experience with electron microscopy of Aluminum systems is preferred
  • Advanced knowledge in the following techniques is required:
    • Secondary and Backscattered Electron Imaging, Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDXS), Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD), Focused Ion Beam (FIB), Transmission Kikuchi Diffraction (TKD), Low kV Analysis and Wavelength Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy. (WDS)
  • Acquisition and data analysis of high throughput particle analysis is highly favorable.
  • Knowledge of Oxford instruments software in including Aztec, Crystal and Feature are desirable.
  • Familiarity with ThermoFisher / FEI Electron microscopes and their software is an asset.
  • Experience with LabVIEW, MATLAB, Python is advantageous
  • Must be Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and ImageJ.
  • The ability to acquire new knowledge, capability and skills in electron microscopy and optical microscopy and the desire and ability to collaborate and communicate across functions are essential to this position.
