We are looking for someone to join Umbra's Space Operations team as a Spacecraft Operations Lead Image Product Engineer. The ideal candidate for this position is both a leader and a doer, as it requires both establishing the processes and procedures to ensure image product success within our space operations team and executing these functions on a daily basis. As the lead image product engineer, you will be tasked with developing and implementing tools to monitor and evaluate image product quality and reliability, working with external customers to optimize satellite tasking, maintaining the health and safety of our key on-orbit assets, conducting mission critical analysis, and providing feedback and guidance to both our internal hardware and software development teams as well as external customers. This position offers a flexible work schedule with the ability to occasionally work from home. However, it also requires the ability to support on-call shifts as needed and off hour shifts during periods of system testing, anomaly resolution or post-launch.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement and oversee satellite image product metrics, tools, processes and procedures
  • Manage small team of direct reports
  • Identify and utilize necessary tools and procedures to monitor, evaluate and improve satellite imagery products
  • Establish processes to effectively communicate with customers regarding tasking or products as needed
  • Oversee on-call shift rotation to maintain 24/7 customer operational support
  • Monitor, operate, and maintain a constellation of on-orbit satellites as part of the Space Operations team
  • Support the product and engineering teams in spacecraft modeling, simulation, mission design, and systems engineering analyses for current and future development efforts
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop, integrate, and test software to enable highly autonomous spacecraft quality and reliability monitoring and evaluation
  • Participate in rotational on-call shifts for anomaly response and conjunction avoidance
  • Perform ad hoc tasking of satellites to evaluate and test new modes of operation

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in a related STEM field (such as aerospace, mechanical engineering, physics, or computer science)
  • Two or more years experience working on spacecraft, satellite imagery products, launch vehicles or robotics
  • Experience with satellite imagery analytics and quality and reliability metrics
  • Experience with on-orbit operations
  • Comfortable with:
    • A scripting language such as MATLAB or Python
    • Orbit analysis or mission design tools such as STK, GMAT or Free Flyer
  • Experience with at least one of the following: orbital mechanics, attitude control, image analysis, image formation, space systems engineering, spacecraft propulsion, flight software
  • Excellent communications skills, ability and desire to work collaboratively in a team environment, and willingness to learn new skills and technology
  • Willing to support on-call shift assignments as needed and occasionally support odd hours near launches, such as overnights and/or weekends
  • Comfortable working in a dynamic and fast-paced development environment.

Desired Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in a relevant field
  • Five or more years experience working on spacecraft, satellite imagery products, launch vehicles or robotics
  • Five or more years experience with satellite imagery analytics and quality and reliability metrics
  • Experience with satellite imagery formation
  • Understanding of SAR Earth observation techniques
  • Experience managing a constellation of satellites
  • Experience utilizing cloud based software
  • Ability to obtain and hold a U.S. security clearance
