About This Position

The department of Campus Planning has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Space Planner/Analyst 1 at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine. The Research Space Planner/Analyst 1 (Medical) serves as a member of the staff of the Office of Space Planning & Analysis and is responsible for identifying and evaluating the efficient use of space by research scientists at the Miller School of Medicine (MSOM). Will identify, categorize, analyze, allocate, and manage space utilized by researchers. Will work with designated management representatives, including members of the Space Planning & Analysis group and the Office for Research Administration to develop and document a coordinated approach to the use of research space. Primary duties and responsibilities will occur at the Miller School of Medicine or at off-site research space occupied by the MSOM. Plays a key role in migrating the USpace space management database and Workday Finance in the ongoing development and utilization of a space utilization system.

The Research Space Planner/Analyst 1 (Medical) embodies a unique combination of training and background, analytical skills, and spatial abilities and is responsible for developing and maintaining a familiarity with and an understanding of the research groups for which he/she is responsible. Ideally, the Research Space Planner/Analyst 1 (Medical) should have either (1) a strong research background with particular emphasis on laboratory equipment and techniques and/or facilities planning and utilization or (2) an architectural background with strong analytical experience with an interest in research lab planning. The Research Space Planner/Analyst 1 (Medical) will serve as the primary person to track the current use of research space, generate reports and participate in Space Utilization System planning and software development meetings.


  • Work closely with the members of the Research Space Planning to routinely survey research space occupancy and utilization.

  • Participate in the collection of data necessary to maintain a reliable database of space occupancy and utilization metrics (space allocations, financial and personnel).

  • Review architectural space plans with as-built conditions and report any inconsistencies to Space Planning & Analysis to correct and update plans as needed.

  • Meet with Department Directors, Center Directors, Program Directors, Principal Investigators, and other management representatives to investigate past, present, and future program resource utilization (including space, grant dollars, and staff) in order to ascertain present and future space-related requirements.

  • Must have sufficient knowledge, or be able to acquire sufficient knowledge, of how research programs function in order to be able to identify inter-program sharing and reallocation of resources so that resource utilization is attributed to the research site where the research actually occurs rather than merely to the administering department.

  • Enter research space data into the USpace Space Planning & Analysis database in accordance with established procedures. May participate in the development and utilization of the Office of Medical Space Planning Space Utilization System automated decision-making support system, as required.

  • Prepare thorough, comprehensive, written interim analyses and final reports of research group's resource utilization with particular emphasis on present and future space and space-related needs. Reports will include empirical analysis of selected financial metrics applied to space utilization.

  • Problem solve and make recommendations regarding the allocation and management of research space. Develop options (based on knowledge of program needs, institutional resources and priorities, and scientific parameters) for utilization of new, alternative, or reassigned research resources.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field

  • Minimum Five years of relevant experience
