I Accountability Objectives:

Evaluates patients, designs and provides treatment programs in accordance with the physician prescription and maintains proper documentation as required by the department.

II Position Qualifications:

Minimum Education, Licensure / Certification and Experience Required.

A. Education

  • Graduate of an accredited institution with a Master's Degree in Speech & Language Pathology.
B. Licensure / Certification
  • Effective December 7, 2013: Current licensure within the State of Michigan to practice.
  • Certificate of Clinical Competency issued by the American Speech & Language Association or completion of Clinical Fellowship Year.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

C. Special Skill / Aptitudes
  • Excellent customer service orientation skills necessary in order to deal effectively with various levels of hospital personnel, outside customers and community groups.
  • Good interpersonal communication skills to deal effectively with patients, families, and hospital personnel.
  • Teamwork approach, a sense of humor, empathy, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude when executive job duties.

III Duties / Responsibilities:
  • Perform objective patient evaluations using proper techniques with accurate and valid results.
  • Retrieve and interpret pertinent information from the patient's medical record, seeking appropriate information from other resources for further clarification if necessary.
  • Identify age related differences within the persons served and will adjust treatment style and expectations as appropriate.
  • Additionally, make decisions on whatever treatment style alterations are necessary based upon the patient's cognitive function (ie, ability to take responsibility for oneself).
  • Provide quality patient treatment.
  • Identify the need for assistive devices and alternative assessments.
  • Process patient billing as required by the department.
  • Maintain all necessary documentation as required by departmental policy.
  • Maintain compliance with reimbursement requirements and authorizations.
  • Must be able to meet productivity expectations as determined by management each fiscal year.
  • Initiate and encourage good communication and relationships with physicians and other healthcare personnel involved in the provision of patient care.
  • Participate in departmental programs related to student education, CFY supervision, Quality Assurance, community education, etc.
  • Build on existing skills and knowledge through continuing education.
  • Adhere to the code of ethics adopted by the department and the profession and to all departmental and hospital policies and procedures.
  • Participate actively in the daily operations of the department and contribute to its compliance with regulations and customer service expectations.
  • Demonstrates and actively promotes an understanding and commitment to the mission of St. Joseph Mercy Oakland through performing behaviors consistent with the Trinity Health Values.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and Local laws and regulations, the Trinity Health Organizational Integrity Program, including the Standards of Conduct, Code of Ethics, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical and professional behaviors.
  • Supports and conducts one's self in a manner consistent with customer service expectations.
  • In accordance with unit or departmental practice, determines that appropriate charges have been entered for the correct patient, encounter, date/time of service, with any required modifiers. Make corrections as needed per charge capture policy/practice.
  • In accordance with unit or departmental practice, actively participates in on-going education and communication regarding revenue management.
  • In accordance with unit or departmental practice, assists with tracking and monitoring of equipment assigned to the unit. Requests services for maintaining equipment as needed.
  • In accordance with unit or departmental practice, proficient with the electronic health records for documentation, assessment, and care management, performing these activities concurrently with provision of care throughout the shift.

V Working Conditions:
  • Hospital environment, subject to some physical stress of moving equipment and assist in the transferring of patients.
