Position Summary

Reporting to the Vice President of R&D, the SR R&D Manager of Design will provide vision, direction and overall leadership to the Surgical development pipeline with the goal to advance the surgical experience by providing innovative and reliable solutions. The focus for our innovation agenda will be to build our next generation solutions across surgical ligation systems, surgical instruments and facial closure.
• Direction and oversight of and R&D team in the research and development of new mechanical medical devices used in surgical procedures.
• Initiating, driving and executing new concept development efforts utilizing customer feedback, clinical insights, market trend dynamics and business/technology research.
• Develop preliminary user needs and technical requirements for envisioned solutions. Define and manage progress phase by phase towards technology maturity resulting in a successful transfer to the new product development team.
• Partnering to develop multi-year strategic product development pipeline to support high growth business.
• Working with functional partners in Project Management Organization (PMO), Marketing, Clinical Medical Affairs, Quality, Regulatory and Operations to develop and continually improve effectiveness and efficiency of the design process.
This new position will provide opportunity to build an agile, customer focused team dedicated to producing the next generation of Surgical innovations.

Principal Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership
• Actively participate in improving the R&D design function by pursuing opportunities to develop the team's competencies, processes, strategies, organization, personnel, and execution of business initiatives.
• Collaborate with cross-functional leaders across the organization to support the development of solid, well-diversified product line roadmaps.
• Develop strategies for products, including technical, regulatory and intellectual property
• Develop outside partnerships with Universities and companies as appropriate to accelerate key technology designs.

Organizational Development
• Provide leadership in growing the R&D teams through recruiting top engineering talent, managing and mentoring engineers to provide continuous learning and growth, and leading an R&D team to help drive engineering projects to fulfill business objectives.
• Actively develop engineers through technical and leadership mentorship and development plans.
• Ensure full utilization of R&D talent
• Create a team environment that supports a strong collaborative drive to and continually looking for opportunities for continued growth.

Functional Planning
• Partner effectively with Marketing and PMO by assisting in product development pipeline planning with active partnership through business stage processes of Portfolio, Proposal and Concept.
• Ensure timely completion of Concept development projects based upon agreed plans and budget.
• Partnering with finance, develop budgets to support design pipeline, departmental growth, and business objectives, and continuously manage budgets to ensure ongoing accuracy, support forecasting, and budget reallocations as needed.

Principal Responsibilities Continued

R&D Design Leadership
•Oversee and guide R&D efforts towards design and development of the product roadmap execution.
•Work closely with Marketing engaging with key customers to obtain insights into unmet needs, industry and technology trends and opportunities to innovate.
•Coordinate with PMO the planning, scheduling, and budgeting related to R&D activities.
•Provide technical contributions to product development projects as needed throughout the development process.
•Interface with experts within Teleflex and from outside sources, companies, and forums to maintain an understanding of new developments in technology, medicine and engineering.
•Foster a culture of creativity, innovation and continuous learning in the organization.
•Continually assess and implement the competencies needed for high-level execution of Concept development initiatives
•Partner with Marketing and directly with customers to help ensure Concepts and testing of prototypes meet market and customer requirements.
•Ensure compliance with department team members regarding job descriptions and training requirements.
•Participate in the development of Company standards and procedures.
•Participate in Quality Audits when required.
•Support the generation of invention disclosures to support patent applications for new technology.
•Stay current with technology, practices, and general engineering knowledge related R&D through seminars, literature, and peer groups.
•Perform other duties as assigned.

Education / Experience Requirements

• Bachelor's degree with at least 10 years of experience in medical device design & development, or a Master's degree with at least 8 or equivalent practical experience.
• Demonstrated experience recruiting, developing, and managing a team of engineers
• Experience in working with customers to translate user needs into successful concepts and new products
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain technical subject matter to non-technical stakeholders
• Experience in design of disposable products for use in laparoscopic and/or robotic surgery is a plus
• Experience in partnering with Marketing to gather VOC
• Experience in concepting ideas that will meet customer needs while delivering on cost, quality and manufacturability targets.

Specialized Skills / Other Requirements

• Able to travel domestically or internationally
