JOB FAMILY SUMMARY PURPOSE:
Under the direction of the Manager – Power Generation Engineering, this position is responsible for the development and implementation of a standardized and comprehensive chemistry program for all El Paso Electric (EPE) plants. Maintain chemistry compliance at El Paso Electric (EPE) plants through active onsite support and presence for consultation and oversight. Supports research conducted within the Business Unit through effective and efficient data collection, evaluation and interpretation. Provide expert level advice and leadership to the team in support of project objectives.



EDUCATION:
Graduation from a recognized College or University with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related technical degree with 5 years chemistry experience associated with the management of chemistry programs at gas fired power generation facilities, or fifteen years of related industrial experience including progressive responsibility utilizing the responsibilities above

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  1. Experience in Environmental awareness and oversight.
  2. Experience in evaluating business processes of Plant Chemistry.
  3. Demonstrated managerial and business skills.
  4. Demonstrated project lead and coordination execution.
  5. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  6. Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with officers, managers, employees, consultants, as approved by executive management, internal and external legal counsel, and representatives from regulatory agencies.
  7. Ability to maintain a strong sense of propriety concerning confidential matters.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Assist in the development of specific strategic and tactical infrastructure initiatives to include analyses of organizational positioning.
  2. Assist in the business planning process; help identify and develop timely business plans to support strategic goals relating to Plant Chemistry.
  3. Plan and direct certain initiatives that have significant impacts on Plant operations relating to Plant Chemistry.
  4. Direct and assist in the oversight and development of long-term and short-term projects for Boiler Chemical Cleaning, Reverse Osmosis, Boiler Water Chemistry Program, Environmental Awareness, Zero Liquid Discharge oversight and more.
  5. Coordinates the implementation of chemistry goals and emerging technologies that support EPE goals.
  6. Ensures sufficient trained staff is available to evaluate and manage station chemistry control programs in accordance with regulatory requirements and industry/vendor recommendations or guidelines.
  7. Proactively sponsors interdepartmental relationships with Engineering, Operations, and Maintenance in planning, coordination and preparation for normal operation and shutdown activities.
  8. Establishes department expectations and participation in benchmarking, self-assessments and various chemistry working groups and industry forums
  9. Integrate the Chemistry Program with Reliability processes.
  10. Develop and improve department capabilities through talent management and development plans for self and direct reports.
  11. Manages the unit's quality control program and performs quality investigations as needed.
  12. Boiler water/steam cycle, corrosion, and corrosion product generation, transport, and deposition on heat transfer and other power generation process equipment water and steam-touched surfaces.
  13. Cooling water system treatment issues.
  14. Water treatment equipment such as demineralizers, condensate polishers, cooling towers, and on-line cycle water chemistry analyzers.
  15. Budget responsibilities for Chemical budget at plant sites
  16. Conduct rounds and inspections to assess plant chemistry performance and compliance with Best Practices limits and conditions. Document findings and take action where needed to close gaps.
  17. Familiar with site specific environmental permits and plans. Work with Plant Manager, Environmental Specialist and State Environmental Group as support for environmental compliance.
  18. Accountable for the performance of the chemistry team and chemical results of the plant
  19. Maintains clear and consistent records of all analytical results and provides leadership to less senior members of the team concerning water quality control. Ensure the water quality is within guidelines for asset protection for Power Generating Fleet. If not within EPRI POE guidelines develop gap closure plan.
  20. Performs oversite for complex and routine chemical testing of products and processing materials.
  21. Advises Entergy personnel on product quality problems and provides a recommended course of action based on quantitative evidence.
  22. Technical Troubleshooting, Data Review and Trend Monitoring, Pi trend reviews, Event Follow-up, Root cause analysis, Support Plant Maintenance Strategies, Reviewing and tracking system efficiency, provide information and training for operations, and sharing of lessons learned with internal peers.
  23. Consultation/oversite for analyses, calibrations, method development and maintenance and/or repair of instruments as needed including long range planning recommendations.
  24. Understands and implements standard EPE methodologies and research processes.
  25. Identifies new methods and instrumentation as needed and implements new methods to meet the needs of the research and development plan.
  26. Assists in instrument procurement, installation, and research implementation. Makes recommendations pertaining to the following: research method development, lab operating procedures, training and oversight of Lab Assistants in the use of new instruments.
  27. Sets priorities for the team to ensure task completion; coordinates work activities with other supervisors.
  28. Decisions are guided by policies, procedures and business plan; receives guidance and oversight from supervisor.
  29. Should expect to engage in extensive travel to multiple EPE Plants as well as vendor facilities.
  30. Must be able to efficiently travel to both local and remote facilities.
  31. Valid Driver's license, be in compliance with the Company's Driving Program Policy
  32. Responsible for ensuring the enforcement of and compliance with all applicable Company policies, procedures and code of ethics as well as all applicable governmental laws and regulations to include employment, safety and environmental standards and regulations
  33. Perform other related tasks that are not included, but are within the context of the duties defined.


WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  1. The incumbents in this classification are not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions; however, primary work environment is typically of an office or administrative nature, but frequent plant visits and consultations at the field level is expected.
  2. May work non-standard hours.
  3. May require travel to Company work sites.
  4. May require out of town travel.
