Job Description

GPI seeks a Surface Transportation Controller on Long Island and possibly in Manhattan. The qualified candidate coordinates with NYSDOT and other metropolitan agencies/organizations to ensure consolidated information on road closures, planned construction, and traffic diversions. Also, recommend NYSDOT regarding any conflicts or motorist/work crew safety.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the Automated Work Zone Enforcement (AWZE) for the Region.
  • Support real-time traffic operations with a focus on the impact on work zones.
  • Analyze weekly interagency notifications and conflicts for ITS resource activation and traveler information dissemination purposes.
  • Attend meetings at the Regional Office, OCMC, and field offices to become familiar with the project impacts on traffic and phasing of work, establish and maintain working relationships with project contacts, and maintain the database to confirm the time frame of the lane or road closures.
  • Coordinate requests with various NYSDOT Groups and be a part of the construction permit process, and assist the Special Construction Coordinator.
  • Prepare Road Work Forms (RWF) and review the information received from the various sources to identify any significant traffic delays or congestion.
  • Provide "Travel Advisory" (PCA) bulletins to the Regional PIO when road work will significantly affect highway capacity.
  • Issue weekly travel advisory by enumerating the ongoing lane closures.
  • Provide draft PVMS/VMS/HAR message plans for road work activities.
Qualifications:

Candidates must meet all the following conditions:
  • Associate's degree or higher in a related field with a minimum of National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) Level 3 equivalent
  • Minimum 2 years of equivalent work experience in construction work zone traffic control (WZTC)
  • Must have MS Office applications, spreadsheets, and databases
  • Work Zone Traffic Control design and/or implementation
  • Knowledge of the ITS Field Assets, their functions, and the NYC Transportation

Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Maintain a valid driver's license with a clean motor vehicle report (MVR) for final consideration
  • Possess a personal vehicle for use on or around a job site
  • Read, write, and understand plans and directions given in the English language
  • Basic computer skills with the ability to create and edit Microsoft Word and Excel documents, create Outlook emails and utilize SharePoint and Microsoft Teams to communicate with other team members
  • Able to traverse a construction job site consisting of uneven ground varying in height and consistency of material, with a variation of elevation 19" or less (mud, gravel, rutted ground, etc.)
  • Able to wear GPI required PPE, i.e., hard hats, safety vest, work boots, and/or safety glasses/goggles while working
