Job Description Summary:

Under the supervision of the Technical Supervisor, the Technical Operations Lead collaborates with the Production Studio Lead and Assistant Technical Director in the preparation, operation, training, scheduling, planning, renting, maintenance, and implementation of technical production elements including but not limited to lighting, audio, and video elements for CoPA productions.
The Technical Operations Lead is focused on the constant preparedness of the CoPA production technical systems, programming and operating those systems, and the training and supervision of student technicians for CoPA productions.
As a Production Management team member, the Technical Operations Lead will also participate in any aspect of the production process, as needed, including offering support in disciplines such as carpentry, props, painting, load-ins/strikes/logistics.
This is a theatre systems-specific experience-level classification in technical theatre and performs all other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities:

Production Load-In / Set-up and Operation

  • Hang, circuit, and focus lighting.
  • Install and strike audio/visual/media equipment.
  • Program and operate production consoles and equipment as needed.
  • Participate in technical rehearsals and performances as needed.
  • Lead the run crew, as needed, for each production.
  • Perform the duties of lighting operator, audio technician, and/or video operator for assigned CoPA productions, as needed.

Systems Maintenance
  • Manage and execute required maintenance on production elements and venue infrastructures.
  • Maintain production tools and equipment in accordance with the best industry standard practices for safety.
  • Meet established deadlines and budgetary parameters.
  • Work with vendors as necessary.
  • Create and follow up on Facilities work orders.
  • Provide suggestions for equipment and systems refresh.
  • Work with the ATD and Technical Supervisor to oversee production inventory.

Student Mentor
  • Work with students regularly, delegating tasks, supervising work, and ensuring quality control.
  • Train and supervise students in the various running crew roles such as light board op, sound board op, video engineer, etc.

Perform other duties as assignedRequired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Technical Theater or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in theatrical lighting and audio programing and operation.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in general theatrical production operations.
  • Ability to read and interpret ground plans and elevations, schematics, CAD drawings, diagrams, light plots, and stage plots.
  • A desire to learn and implement varying technologies and materials.
  • Familiarity and/or proficiency with theatrical audio system architecture, including hardware (Yamaha audio consoles), software (DANTE Virtual Soundcard, QLab, etc.), handling, programming, and operating.
  • Broad Knowledge of Clear Com Systems.
  • Familiarity and/or proficiency with theatrical lighting system architecture, including hardware (ETC lighting consoles), software (Vectorworks Spotlight, Lightwright, ETC EOS, etc.), handling, programming, and operating.
  • Ability to do basic repairs and maintenance on technical theatre equipment and accessories.
  • Broad knowledge of equipment and systems associated with the video recording and live streaming of performing arts content.
  • Experience in scenic carpentry and using construction tools (i.e. can build a flat unsupervised).
  • Experience as performance stagehand.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks when faced with interruptions, distractions, and fluctuating workloads, and to carry out duties in a reliable and timely manner. Strong analytical and organizational skills to prioritize schedules, projects, and resources and to meet deadlines in a multi-venue, multi-disciplinary environment with overlapping space allotments and complex schedules.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing. Interpersonal skills to interact with diverse groups of individuals at all organizational levels, both inside and outside of the university.
  • Ability to remain calm and respond confidently and promptly to stressful situations. Capacity to solve problems with diplomacy and tact.
  • Ability to use creative thinking and sound judgment in dealing with a variety of personality types and situations; to follow and apply safety and work-related policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of pertinent regulations and codes relating to theater productions.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-based environment and work independently and follow-through on assignments with minimal direction/instruction.
  • Strong organizational skills, interpersonal skills, and attention to detail.
Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in Stage Management.
  • Demonstrated managerial experience, preferably with a performing arts organization or higher education institution.
  • Demonstrated capacity to build and motivate teams within a welcoming and sustainable work environment.
  • Experience in driving stake bed trucks and electric car.
  • Familiarity and/or proficiency with live/streaming (Wirecast or similar software) and editing video content (Final Cut Pro or similar software).
  • DANTE Level 2 Certification
  • Current OSHA 10 Certification
