Position Overview:

The Terminal Operator position is an integral part of an operationally focused team delivering value through safe, environmentally sound, and reliable terminal, rail, and pipeline operations. This position supports the day to day operation of the terminal business and is the focal point for external customers loading and discharging vessels along with pipeline transfers at the terminal. This position is responsible for maintaining safety in the workplace and all regulatory criteria and safely perform all duties related to the receipt, storage, and distribution of petroleum products. It is important to note that new hires are required to successfully complete the Structured and Marine Structured Operator Training program, within a designated time frame from start date. During this extensive training, the candidate must be able to demonstrate at a skilled level the required competencies for the information presented.

Responsibilities:

A Terminal Operator must be an individual that is a self-directed to perform the following tasks independently and alongside their fellow Terminal Operators. Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Shall comply with Motiva's Life Saving Rules and ensure they are adhered to by all individuals working in Motiva's facilities
  • Facilitate the safe movement, receipt, and shipment of product between pipelines, rail cars, marine, tanker trucks, and storage tanks by strictly following policies and procedures and ensuring proper system lineup
  • Ensure that product transactions are properly measured, accurately documented, and conducted in accordance with established policies and procedures
  • Ensure that tanks are properly gauged by physically climbing the tanks and reading a gauge tape and plumb bob accurately down to 1/16th of an inch
  • Use basic analytical test equipment and follow procedures for performing and documenting product quality assurance testing
  • Initiate/Assist in the maintenance and repair of metering devices, pumps, valves, facility related equipment, and perform meter/additive calibration. Be proactive in troubleshooting before making a call to contractors.
  • Perform and document transport truck, dock, tank, and routine terminal inspections
  • Perform stock balancing and reporting
  • Issue work permits and oversee contract workers
  • Facilitate Driver Training
  • Perform minor Terminal hardware & maintenance purchasing in accordance with company procedures
  • Perform terminal housekeeping and labor duties including litter clearing
  • Ensure safe handling of fuels while receiving product via pipeline, marine, or rail.
  • Promote and enforce health, safety, security, and environmental activities - intervene within company guideline when necessary
  • Comply with Motiva Measurement Policy and be able to adhere to and follow assessment guidelines.
  • Comply with Motiva Butane Standard Operating Procedure and be able to identify PID's, SOP's, and PSM criteria. To comply with state and local inspection requests.
  • Perform Rail, Marine PIC duties - identify the severity of non-compliance, i.e. leaving without relief, ship-to-shore protocol, Coast Guard, FRA-DOT guidelines and compliance.
  • Perform daily environmental inspections (LDAR)
  • Identify, investigate, document & escalate issues with close attention to detail
  • Analyze and comprehend reports
  • Identify continuous Improvement activities
  • Interact with government agencies
  • Update and maintain terminal InControl
  • Perform instrument calibrations
  • Participate in security protocols at the facility as required and report incidents to appropriate parties
  • Investigation of facility malfunctions observed or reported including lighting, fencing, security.
  • Comply with Motiva Security Standards by controlling traffic and entrance gates
  • Inspect visitor's vehicles and badges
  • Perform other tasks identified and needed for safe, environmentally sound, and reliable operations
  • Comply with Daily, Monthly, Quarterly, Annual record keeping requirements.
  • Be trained as Haz Mat Technician and fit tested to use a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus or half and full-face respirator.
  • Be Operator Qualified in certain DOT duties.
  • Operate pumps, docks, and tanks from control room.
  • Work with Control Center to operate DOT pipelines.

Special Challenges:
  • Hazards: There are numerous hazards associated with doing this job, including potential exposures to products, inclement weather conditions, slippery surfaces, water, snow, ice, grease. Potential for falls from heights of approximately 50 feet. Potential for poor biomechanics application during awkward positioning.
  • Physical Demand Requirements: Scattered skills ranging from light to heavy (forklift or assistance of other workers available for heavy to very heavy material handling and maintenance duties.
  • Biomechanics Application: General knowledge base and physical flexibility for varied postures/position transitions during material and non-material handling activities in various areas and work heights within and around the product/plant.

Experience and Required Qualifications:
  • Must have ability to work in our Spartanburg, SC terminal
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States on a permanent basis without the requirement of a work visa
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must have a minimum of a high school diploma or GED
  • Must be able to speak, read and write English proficiently
  • Must possess a current, valid driver's license
  • Must currently hold or be able to qualify to receive a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card. Note, information regarding TWIC standards may be found at https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/twic.
  • Work outside in inclement weather with or without accommodation
  • Work in compact and confined spaces
  • Climb ladders, walk up and down steps, and work at heights with or without accommodation
  • Be able to attend to emergencies, successful candidates must reside within 60 minutes of the site, or relocate to within 60 minutes of the site without relocation assistance
  • Work a rotating shift work schedule
  • Work overtime, holidays, nights, and weekends
  • Be on call and meet callout standards to respond to site responsibilities and emergencies.
