Essential Functions

  • Ensures tools are maintained and production-ready to support daily production requirements.
  • Ensures the Tooling Support Technician team is well-organized and staffed to provide timely response to a down tool and provide tooling preventative maintenance activities.
  • Ensures that tooling technicians are fully trained in safe operating practices and procedures. Ensures all forms and tags specified in our procedures and work instructions are always utilized and properly completed by the tooling team members. Ensures these procedures and work instructions are maintained and current.
  • Schedules tool room work to optimize resource utilization and tool room equipment performance while ensuring tools are ready for production.
  • Develops and maintains a tooling preventative maintenance program to ensure optimal tooling performance and availability for production.

  • Defines and manages the tool room budget to optimize performance and minimize cost.
  • Utilizes 5S as a means of driving the continuous improvement process and ensuring the tool shop is clean and well-organized. Strives to identify and eliminate waste. Utilizes visual management tools and techniques to promote best practice and minimize downtime.
  • Focuses team and sets priorities to ensure performance targets (PMP) are met. Leads team in achieving performance targets.
  • Sets clear performance expectations for the team and team members. Promotes an atmosphere of mutual respect and establishes a well-understood code of conduct amongst team members. Holds team members accountable for the quality and timeliness of their work.
  • Works closely with Production and Quality and their respective teams to drive continuous improvement in product and process particularly leading the effort to improve tooling performance as it relates to part quality and production throughput. Leads the efforts to identify problem tools and works closely with Production to optimize tool performance.

  • Ensures tool room equipment is well-maintained and operating at maximum efficiency.
  • Ensures healthy and safe work conditions are maintained at all times on the plant floor.

  • Ability to competently read and understand tooling drawings
  • Strong die trouble-shooting capabilities

  • Demonstrated ability to plan and organize effectively and to be able to use methodical approaches to complex problems/issues
  • Must possess the ability to communicate with a broad range of process partners
  • Strong motivational skills, listening skills and communication skills
  • Resourcefulness in accomplishing objectives and tasks
  • Strong managerial and leadership skills

  • Ability to operate typical machine shop tools for metal forming and removal and measurement tools
  • Experience using a 3D CAD package to view/create tooling models desired
  • Experience using AutoCAD to view tooling drawings desired
  • Ability to read Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing symbology desired
  • Ability to operate wire EDM and automated CNC Mills desired

Certifications and Special Requirements

Required Education and Experience

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience as a toolmaker, tool room supervisor, or tooling engineer
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience working with Progressive Die sheet metal stamping dies
